Maki plastics by clam
« on: Jan 25, 2015, 07:40 PM »
this weekend was my first time using plastics through the ice. To be honest I was fairly impressed,I used the maki minnow head and they held up well.

I've used the maki, jamei, and minnow a few times now and they are effective at interesting fish but they did not hold up well for me. I found that the jamei was the most effective body style, and so I went searching for other plastic makers with a similar body style and I like the gander mountain mustache plastic. It has a similar body plan as the jamei but it has a more durable plastic compound yet it is still pliable and lifelike action. I also like that I can "tune" it for the fishes mood. I can remove legs to make the bait lower profile.
Good Fishin!!!

I'm actually going to gander mtn tomorrow,I'll have to look for those. The maki I noticed held up well to the fish but if I were to switch it from jig to jig a few times I could see where there would be a bit of tearing.

if you are getting into the plastics game and fish for panfish, dont forget custom jigs and spins. Their wedgee on a 4mm tungsten was a hot combo yesterday.

Thanks for the advice Kevin. It's a pain trying to keep waxes alive so I'll look into plastics for sure

The northland impulse baits are great as well. Gills love the mayfly.

To be honest I sometimes question the effectiveness of scented plastics

I really like the Clam Maki Jamei plastic bait.  Problem is, it's so small, I can barely get it threaded on a jig with my 54-year-old old eyes.  Even with readers on, I struggle.  :-)

They're kind of pricey and don't take much abuse, but they catch fish!

Tight lines,
Bob

I've been wanting to try them. I have good luck with gulp maggots at times. So, you all think the clam maki jamei is one of the better ones?

The maki minnow head was hot this last weekend for crappie. From what I've seen they make a 1" size and a 1.5 inch size

I have had real good luck with the purple Jamei, I used it with great success on bluegills last winter. They are a little expensive though, especially when I can catch just as many fish on a Little Atom Nuggie. Just my 0.02

you might want to check out the Jamei XL that Clam is bringing out this year. same profile as the other jamei but is larger (1 1/2" vs 1 1/8").another option is to order directly from Maki Plastics. Maki's owner is a Clam pro staff member. Maki is based in new york.
