Out with dad
« on: Jan 25, 2015, 07:13 PM »
Made it out with my dad today for only the 2nd time ever on the ice.  He went with me once before when I first started ice fishing about 8 years ago.  My dad hates the cold weather more than anyone I know.  I begged him all year to go.  I got a new suit and boots this year so told him he could wear my old suit and boots to help keep him warm.  I took the shanty and heater and he said the boots and suit kept him warm so we never ended up using it.  Havent been on a good bluegill bite all season so I took him to a lake that is loaded with pike and we were going to try and ice a few pike.  We struck out on the pike.  Kinda how my entire season has gone so far.  Only ended up getting 2 flags.  1 was a bass and one had a good run and ended up dropping the bait.  One of my tipup flags broke so I replaced it with a rose.  As I was setting the tipups I told him the rose story and he said I hope I catch one on the rose.  The rose was actually the 1st flag to pop and the one he caught the bass on.  Wasn't the greatest day by any means but it was great to get out with him and he actually stayed warm.  I only have 1 vex so let him fish the whole time.  He ended up with a bass and some bluegills.

My dad has been living impaired for 15 years and there are not to many days that pass by that I don't think about him. Those are the best memories when you can do something with them they generally despise doing and you love to do. I am sure he did it because he is a great father and cares for you very much. Thanks for sharing a great moment and memory. I am holding my 2 1/2 year old son who has a chest infection and know that I will sleep a few hours before going to work. But I would not change it for the world because I know the times I have with my son and daughter are far to fleet.

Nice story ,good improvising on the tip up flag. You should print out the photo of your dad holding his fish and rose. He could give it to your mom in a Valentine's day card.

I couldn't get my dad out on the ice no matter how hard I tried.  Open water, yes, ice, no.
Fisherman's Prayer

And when it comes to my last cast,
       I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
           And peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be Judged
              BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.

That's awesome Darin! Lost my Dad this September. This is my first ice season without my daily calls reporting my fishing day to him. He took me and my brothers open and hard water fishing since we were little. He gave us a legacy and a lot of good memories. Enjoy your times together. If you get him out against, I have an extra Vex you can borrow. Just say the word!!

I am very fortunate that my Dad loves to ice fish. We fish together almost every weekend on the ice.He has gotten a little soft and now rarely leaves the house without his shanty and Mr. Buddy heater but he is out there faithfully. Just need to get him to leave the bass alone and go salmon fishing with me more but I don't think I will ever win that battle.

I need to get one of those coffee pots for the ice.  He may be a lot more willing to get out there if he knew we could brew hot coffee on the ice.  Bramabull if you ever need someone to go salmon fishing with get ahold of me ;D

Very fortunate to have a dad that loves to fish as much as or more than me, and a grandpa that doesn't fish anymore, but still knows everything there is to know about fishing (or thinks he still does)  ::) ;D

Always good times on the water with my dad, uncle, and now the rest of the 'Shiners'  ;D

I will take you up on that. I am on the big lake every weekend weather permitting and I am always for people to go. I don't like going out there and only able to run 3 or 6 rods. I like to run 9-10 rods in my set.

Pretty cool.
Opposite problem here, retired and neither boy hunts or fishes.

Here I was counting on them to pull the sled in my "golden" years. drat.

Glad you two had a great time!
