What lanterns are you useing?
« on: Jan 25, 2015, 01:55 PM »
So im thinking of buying a new lantern cuz for whatever reason they dont seem bright anymore compared to others snd i clean the globes fairly regularly, whats everyones preferabce? I currently have two older colemans, prolly 12 years old both double mantles, i would prefer to stick to propane if possible, or maybe there isnt a brighter one?????

I liked my Coleman double mantel propane. Have kids now and converted to LED. Anything that gets hot and made of glass is a no no for sure. Planning on going back to the propane when they get older. I think Meijer had them for like forty bucks with a plastic case.

Coleman Northstar. Super bright but the mantles can be hard to find. I use it to also heat my flip over shanty.

I use a Coleman northstar and love it! Brighter than other propane lanterns I have used and seems to put off more heat!

I got the baby Cole man single mantle.  Very small but great light easy to transport.   Good for my too small scout shanty
The mantles hold up better than the regular dual mantle
North star is good but I have limited space in my too small shanty

I bought a 4 head led light bar from Menards and zip tied to the top support bar. Has two settings for high and low. Use buddy heater to stay warm.

Coleman 288,  two mantel white gas lantern that will flat out blind you. Been using it since 1988 for all outdoor activity.

white gas benefits:

White gas lanterns are brighter than propane (especially in cold weather)
You can top off the tank before each outing instead of packing around extra propane tanks
No empty propane tanks to pack out or throw away
White gas is more economical

Tips:

If your white gas lantern isn't as bright as it once was, replace the generator (brass tube between the mantels.

Use Peerless mantels, they are made with Thorium and are brighter and whiter than Coleman mantles.

Replace the black neoprene pump cup with a leather one, it will pump in -20* weather, no problem.

I like the Coleman white gas lanterns also.  I can hear and light the shanty at the same time.  Gas seems to be fairly reasonable.  I go through about 2-3 gallons on the Ice each year.  That is also using it in my small cooker also.  Had brats on the Ice the other night

Been using my Coleman dual fuel for ?? years. Agree with the post above. If it's not bright, replace the genny and mantles..Mine is 40+ years old and going strong. Light and heat..

I also am using a Coleman white gas lantern - it is a model 200A single mantle that was my grandpa's.  Date stamp on the bottom of the tank shows a manufactured date of December 1951!  Probably staying with it for sentimental reasons more than anything!

Northstar Propane a no brainer imo. Turn gas on turn switch instant light. No pumping up. No stinky fuel to mess with and parts like brass tubes or seals needing replaced. Northstar double mantle bright enough I sure can't look directly into it without being blinded. Led lights are fine but the lantern will provide both light and heat. If you want heat with led lights your buying a heater then however I've had some great brauts and coneys cooked on top of a heater! So on second thought gk with the led lights and the heater!  ;D

I'm old school so 2 gas single mantel red  Coleman and 3 gas double mantel green  Coleman. I use the single mantel most of the time with a piece of aluminum foil covering over 1/2 of the globe. This cast the light forward and not back into my eyes which is great when hanging up the lantern at night.
