Trout in central mass?
« on: Jan 23, 2015, 11:28 PM »
Looking to get my first trout through the ice in the central mass area, I've heard shiners right below the ice, sometimes people use dry flies just below as well and also jigging with mealworms. I've tried three times before at fort pond in Lancaster and once at neighboring spec pond with 0 luck. I don't know if either of those are worth another shot but I was looking at mirror lake in Devens. In the fall I got some fast action there near the boat ramp from brookies on rooster tails! Any tips are greatly appreciated!

I'm not a pro, but I have luck in shallower water with a sandy bottom

Comet Pond Hubbardston. typical slow trout waters but can produce some good ones. Stocked very heavy spring and fall. Fort Pond also stocked heavy just very slow.
Hard water Tight lines Flags up. Doesn't get any better than that

try power eggs for bows in 4 to 5 ft of water, crawlers also if they are not hitting shinners. mirror sounds like a good pond to try.

Mat I have had luck keep them down using a split shot. Can cause them to be more finicky but I have had success.

Dont be shy drilling holes in 8 inches of water, I have had my best luck with trout REALLY CLOSE to  shore, I mean you can see bottom.... try sandy shores, outlets and weedlines...
