MA "Big Mouth Buffalo" on the Red
« on: Jan 23, 2015, 01:25 PM »
I was very surprised to hook into this 31" Big Mouth Buffalo (sucker) on the Red this morning. Have never caught one before. Jig and a minnow in 13 ft of water. He was suspended about 5 ft off bottom and inhaled it! What a fight, barely fit through the hole.

Thanks to Svengalli for correcting me - I thought it was a carp!

My pleasure.  The moment I saw the picture I knew it wasn't a common carp, my first thought was asian carp :o until I remembered the Bigmouth Buffalo.  Must of been a good fight :flex: and a tight fit even through the 10" hole.

Yeah I don't think they're frequently caught but definitely spread throughout the Red.  I think they're more common on the Qu'apelle (sp?).

If you look on page 106 of the 2015 MB fishing/hunting mag (the one with last years MA's) you'll see a pic on the bottom left with a 35.5" "Sucker".  It's a Bigmouth Buffalo which are of the sucker family.  In fact I'd be willing to bet that most of the MA sucker over 28" are Bigmouth Buffalos.  Biggest sucker otherwise I ever caught was 27" (red sucker).

Uncut angling had a video up last year of one being caught on the red also.

I have never heard of one of them being caught through the ice before.
hoch7231, congrats on that unique catch. :woot:

They are indeed found in the Qu'Appelle River system as well as the lakes through out that system, but there numbers are quite low here in SK.
and as such have to go back.
