who keeps and who releases?
« on: Jan 20, 2015, 05:20 PM »
I'm a releaser myself unless its a nice size burbot.   I'm sure most on here are releasers since we can get such good quality fish in the summer.

Kill em and grill em!!!!
Certain fish I release back into the water others get released into a vat of boiling oil!!!   ;D

As for Alaskan summer fish, the salmon go back into the water. Not a fan of eating them.
Halibut, rock fish and ling..............well, they get the boiling oil treatment!!!

This fish was released..........and departed with a kick. I release all the fish I catch in the lakes up here.  Better eating fish can be caught in the summer months.

I do both depending on the situation.
Sure I have plenty of fish in my pantry and freezer. but some fresh trout or Kokanee is great eating.
We also have some elders we give fish to and they are always happy to get some fresh fish midwinter especially since they can't get out and get it themselves.
So we often release some and keep some.

I release lakers and char and all rainbows unless I'm going to keep one for that nights dinner, and sometimes on camping trips. I will keep burbot over 28", it always gets eaten quickly.  We get alot of salmon and sometimes halibut/ rockfish for the freezer.  I will also keep all whitefish.

I'm having fresh burbot for dinner right now.  I release all lakers even the ones that aren't going to make it.  Save a burbot kill a whitefish.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

Depends on where I'm fishing.  I keep pike and a few burbot.  Nothing better than fresh burbot in the shack ;)  I release the lake trout, just love catching them and hope to for a long time.  Living in Alaska spoils us to the point we don't need to ice fish for food.  I fill the freezer, smoker and canner with salmon during the summer months.  I grew up in Maine and tried to killed a feed for the table every trip out and would do the same today if I was there ;)
If you wantah be a fishah you gotah smoke a swishah!
