Navionics App
« on: Jan 20, 2015, 12:28 PM »
Does anyone use the navionics app on their phones for lake maps?  I usually look at structure maps on lakes that I'm going to go fish, but with cell phones having gps, I'm curious if this might be a better route.  I also don't know how it works, or if you have to use the paid for version to find accurate lake maps?  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Yep, best $9.99 I've spent!  Not sure about dead on accuracy but gets you close enough to drill around a 15-30 ft radius.  And if you're lucky, some chumps may have even publicly shared spots within the app, putting you on structure/brush piles.  Ask me how I know, my friend shared a spot I showed him on a public lake, it was my go to first ice spot that I could limit out on crappie every year, and usually I was the only one there.  Just went there last Saturday to find a dozen people sitting on the spot...SMH!  I should be slapping his head...

In my opinion it blows hand held GPS devices with map chips out of the water.   The navionics map overlays Google maps (satellite photos as well) to allow you to find drops, humps, and in some cases general areas of interest for fish ( walleye, bass, crappie).  You can also leave way points on particular spots and record tracks to make traveling in the dark easier.   Worth every dollar ($10.00) .

I have been that app for several years. Its def worth $10. Its great for depth contours and such.  I use that in combination with Backcountry Navigator app to keep spots private and has better overlay maps.

Does the app allow you to mark waypoints etc., similar to a GPS unit or is it just a map app?  Also, is there a particular one anyone recommends?  I see they have one for fishing as well as a few others.

I see one that says Navionics Boating USA for 9.99.  Is the one you use?  Sorry, just don't want to buy an app for America's Cup yachters.  Thanks

Great app.  I've used it for a couple of years kayak fishing and just started using it for ice fishing on my Samsung III.  I like that you can download maps for a specified area and still pull up the map (in case you do not have cell phone reception on the lake).  Caution though in buying this app in that it doesn't have maps to all the maps in area.  In PA, only the major lakes are mapped in Navionics.

I will mention that you can get the Vexilar SonarPhone and map lakes thru your mobile phone. Of course it won't be private to your self but it will be mapped. 85% of Lowrance mapping done thru insight genisis is public

Its a really helpful tool to see the layout of the lake and I always use it to guide myself to an area of interest. The only problem I see with it is most cell phone GPS recievers are only good to within 20' so the accuracy of your location can be off a little bit. I use it every time I go out.

How do you update lakes on navionics? Been trying to get the little lake on clear lake to update.

If you are looking to improve GPS accuracy you can get an external WASS GPS reciever for your device, they make one that goes on your wrist and will greatly improve upon your cell gps.

Can anyone point me to a reference guide or share some pointers?  I am fairly tech savvy, but am struggling with this app.  I want to mark waypoints and see gps coordinates, but all I see are tracks.  Assume this is for trolling.  I am sure it is something obvious, but I just want to mark some spots without the compass, map, and satellite options coming up.

There is so much you can do with this app. There is a help tab on the Menu Tab and scroll down to the bottom of the page that is plethora of info.

I work for Navionics, but my hands are tied by the forum rules on how much I can do since Navionics is not a site supporter.

I did a couple of webinars a couple weeks ago on another site that was well received.

Kirt, you guys should allow the import of custom layers, kml/kmz files, and image overlays. I've been having to use Custom Maps for overlays of areas with no info in Navionics. Itd be nice if I could use a single app
