I Love this Sport!
« on: Jan 17, 2015, 07:08 PM »
I had to decide if I wanted to go to work or ice fishing Friday....hmmmm that was a tough decision  ;) ;D! With temps expected to be around 50 for the day, light winds and good ice it didn't take much convincing. I think what I like most about this sport is the challenge of finding that one gold mine of a hole or an area where the fish are stacked. Once found, it is the nirvana or the holy grail in ice fishing terms. After drilling about 30 holes, I found such a spot. I must have found a bend in the creek channel as I was in 18 FoW in one hole and then just feet away I was in 15 FoW. The fish were stacked and suspended in that creek channel. Everything from wax worms to plastics worked all day. Here's a few pics:

Good haul! I love those kind of days.

So sick of the crowds, I need to go find myself a honey hole like that!

That is interesting! Guys like me, who live in the southernmost part of the ice fishing latitude, just wish for a longer season. Whereas folks in the north long for lakes with little pressure or crowding...I guess I have to be grateful for the season we get, especially when the only people I saw on this lake were the two park rangers who came out to say hello.

tight lines,

Jeff

@ Barrel,

On the day I fished (Jan. 16th) there was 6"+ of clear ice. After almost two weeks of warm temps there might be a skim layer left, unfortunately! I am happy I made it out twice this year so far, but I'm hoping to make a trip up around Peoria in mid February. It looks like the weather may begin to be favorable after this coming Sunday  ;D :o!

@Barrel,

Still hoping for one last foray to the north (just don't know how far) next weekend. Last year I hit Dawson with some success and met some really board members; Lake Busse in Iowa the year before, and Argyle Lake before that. I'm considering Lakes Evergreen/Bloomington/Storey/Carelton or other recommendations from the central IL board  ;)! Any PMs/input/suggestions or companionship appreciated!

tight lines,

Jeff

Hey, Jeff. I may be able to join you. When you say next weekend do you mean February 7-8 or February 14-15? Always have trouble with "this weekend" vs. "next weekend". lol  Should be able to join you if you don't get too far north.

Kevin,

I'm looking at the weekend of the 14th. The temps look to be pretty favorable through the next week so I'm hoping to explore the central IL waters. I look forward to seeing you again if you can break away and the weather holds out!
