Burbot near Calgary?
« on: Jan 16, 2015, 12:02 AM »
Grant59's post about burbot near Edmonton got me thinking about how delicious burbot is. Does anyone know of any decent burbot lakes within 2 hours of Calgary?

I know Clear Lake and Pine Coulee have them - but has anyone been catching them out there this season?

Crawling valley has good burb action. East side by the islands I find is best for numbers, west side for size

Best wait till Feb when they start getting ready to spawn.

Fished Pine Coulee a few weeks back for several hours after dark and not one bite between about 10 of us counting all the kids.

ill be out trying on magregor this weekend. camping out in a "Clam 6 pack" . See what swims by. target a pike while fishing white fish in day and switch over to see if burbot are around at night.  stop by and say hi. hope the ice holds well in this tropical heat wave.

thanks for the tip shotgun. I will have to try that another time. I was at north end. no burbot for me. one nice 24" walleye had to go back, and I caught my first night time pike at 4am. greedy little thing swallowed my smelt then started to eat my big sucker laid out . it just so happened that I had fallen asleep so you can imagine how I jumped when both bells and alarms go off at the same time. now I have no reason to question the pike at night thing. pitch black no moon ..... there was 12' nice black ice with 8" poor melting ice on top at noon on sunday. I decided to get my vehicle off.

Burbs should be starting to gorge themselves in lue of their upcoming spawn.   They should be more active during daylight hours. The far north end of crawling valley has a big sand flats. Had really good luck in 8-16' of water pounding the bottom with a black jig head and smelt.. might go try on saturday

Thanks Coolhand.

Tell me how do you access the lake from the north end.  I know you have to turn at the hutterite colony but where do you access the lake?

Drive through the colony and you will come to a road that will take you to the north dam. We stick to the west side shore and drive along the shore off the ice and walk on.. if you use Google Earth you can see the dam and the road leading too it..

There was a good foot of hard clear ice yesterday at PCR where I was, didn't look like the weather impacted it at all. Skunked.
