Is it a space issue?
« on: Jan 04, 2006, 04:33 PM »
Just wondering why pictures need to be hosted elsewhere.  Is it a storage/cost issue?

I am not to sure why, but my guess would be because this site as so many users from all over the US and Canada wanting to share their reports and pictures to everyone....I find it makes it easier to check out and comment on everyones reports when they are all organized in one forum.......Could be wrong :-[

I'll bite.

Yes, it is a space issue, but more importantly, a bandwidth issue. Scott pays for an allotment of "bandwidth" each month. Bandwidth meaning the amount of data that his web host will send out. We'll give it a figure like 10 GB a month (10,000 MB, give or take a few MB).

Now, imagine that on the January 1st I were to post 10 pictures taken by a 6 MP digital camera, that weighed in at 2 MB each. That's 20 MB of storage space to keep the pics, 20 MB against Scott's monthly allotment, PLUS each person that views that thread takes up 20 MB of Scott's 10,000 MB monthly bandwidth allotment. Now, imagine 100 people view that thread...100x20MB is 2,000 MB of "bandwidth", 1/5th of Scott's total monthly allowance, from one member, posting 10 pics. Now multiply that by a few thousand IS Members....not cool.

If IS forces you to use HTML to point to another server, as is the case now, the picture data transfer does not count against Scott's allotment, but against Photobucket or whoever.

Scott does not charge for IS memberships, but if he started hosting pictures, he would surely have to.

The only reason I asked was that I would like to post some pics but don't like signing up for accounts all over the net.  My spam rate has only gone up and I wish I knew which site was responsible for it.  I hate to give up my email address but it looks like I'm going to have to.  I am a computer professional and know technologically it is very feasible for a site to allow uploads of pictures and other documents.  Just thought that if Scott(Is that right) had his own server he may just need to allow this.  I understand that there are many issues as to why he wouldn't want to do this and I have no gripes.  Just thought I'd ask as several threads have lost pictures due to them disappearing off the hosting sites.

If you're worried about SPAM, you should be registering all of your non-important info with a throwaway address, like yahoo, gmail, or hotmail.  Don't use your primary.  All of my bulletin board registrations for example are to a yahoo address.  No SPAM at home.

I can't speak for Scott but I believe killitandgrillit pretty much nailed it.

Chucker has a good point (I have 3 email addresses), also there are spam blockers that can be had at places like downloads.com for free.

Yes Kill nailed it. Iceshanty.com did 189 gigabytes of transfer in December 05
Also the forum with over 300 users on pretty much sucks close to all of the resources of the server during peak traffic times.

I'm in aggreance with everyone else. Photo bucket work's good for me and no spam from there. The only time I think a photo goes missing on here is when the person removes it from the host site. I found that out the hard way :'(

Thank's for the vote of confidence for photo bucket.  I feel better.  Yes I have another email address for doing ebay but it just one more thing to keep straight.  I'm trying to keep my life simple.

I doubt you will have any problem with photo bucket but I sure do understand your concerns. I recently switched to earthlink and am being assaulted with email spams for everything from young virgins to free viagra and just have to dump 75% of the emails I am getting.
What really stinks is they are not even being sent to my actual email address but they get here anyway.
Might be it is time to switch ISPs again.
