So, how "big" is a big burbot?
« on: Jan 06, 2015, 02:55 AM »
Caught a fairly large, stinky, slimy burbot over the weekend and was wondering where it fell on the scale of what's average and what is considered large for these fish.
Fish was caught Sat at the Gorge. Was 31" long and weighed 5lbs 7 oz.
Big? Average?

I would say that is a big burbot. Especially in the Gorge.

The biggest i've heard of out of the gorge was 13 lbs. With a a few more over 10 lbs. Not a whole lot caught so 5.5 lbs is a fairly big creature.

They don't stink unless you let them lay around and bask in the sun. Clean them asap or throw them back in. Stay out of the guts.

The biggest I've caught was 40" and only weighed in a 7.5lbs.  I've heard of 12lbs before but have never seen one myself.

In 2010, 2011 and 2012 when the burbot numbers where still high in the Gorge, we would catch 7 and 8lbers all the time. I personally caught an 42" 11lber in Febuary of 2011. Fishing for them this year has been slow. I have caught 1 burbot in 4 nights of fishing.
My wife knows more about fishing then you!

Dear list and kinky,
In the  gorge, it is against the regs. to throw any burbot back in the water.  They can not be left on the ice either (wanton waste of fish.resource).  My answer, take them to the neighbors.

The state record is 19 lbs 4 oz at 44 inches. I would say now yours falls in the bigger than average category. Nice fish. I know Fontenell has bigger than average ling but not much for quantity.. Fishon

2 guys fishing up from our party last spring dropped 3 garbage bags full of ling off at our camp, they didn't eat ling so they offered them up to us.  I believe they had 25 of em in the bags and 3 over 42".  Never weighed them but I am a firm believer if the food supply keeps up, the state record ling will come out of Fontenelle some day

that is a nice size one.  the two biggest that i have landed was one right at 37 inches and at 39.  I did see my ex-mother in law pull a 42.5 incher  just at 14 pounds and it was a beast.  All out of bull lake. there are some unholy behemoths of monsters in there and of course the fish stories and legends always makes me go back haha. all in all though great fish

I caught one in 1981 that was 48 inches and 14+ lbs by the Boysen marina, and in 1983 1 that was 40 inches north of the marina.  nothing has come close to that since then

A friend of mine catches monsters 10 pounds or bigger out of dinwoody lake. I would be a happy camper with the ones you caught though.
