anybody been out in the QC?
« on: Jan 05, 2015, 08:26 PM »
Just wonder if anybody has ventured out to see how the ice is doing. I am really hopping the snow will blow right off the lakes. I drove by a few lakes tonight and they had very little snow on them. Looks like all the slush has turned to ice. Im thinking we are prob close to 4" and if the snow blows off the ice for Wed -3 we should be pushing 6-7" by weekend.
Thanks in advance!

20mph winds Thursday and Friday might help...6" of snow so far today on top of the 2-3" we got the other day.

I'll be on the ice next week for sure

Yeah I was out thursday, friday, and saturday. On thurs I measured 7" on one spot that is shaded 24/7.. it never went out with the warm spells. On friday I found 4" on one lake, and then went back on saturday after the rain to a different part of the lake and found 3-3.75". Have not been out since, nor talked to anyone who has been out so I have no clue what the conditions are now.  I'm hoping for 5-6" by this weekend, with all the snow that is on it. I'd be happy with more, but hoping for 6". Be nice to hit some of the better waters and not just my early ice spots.

Wow that's good to hear. I didn't think it would be that thick yet. I hopping all this wind will blow the snow off the lakes that way all this cold weather has a chance to really build the ice up. Thanks Kevin for the update.

Yesterday, Hennepin canal in geneseo had 4 inches of ice.
I'm what you would call an ice fishing freak.

Sunset used to get ice fished pretty hard, not sure about now - don't know anyone that fishes there any more. Campbells Island harbor quad cities or Campbells chute south of keithsburg lol

I think the edges are going to be pretty soft. May have to walk the plank lol. Maybe not as long as there's no rain and no sunny days it should take awhile. Time will tell.

Fished a farm pond today south of the Qc that had between 9-10" of decent ice.  The shoreline was holding well but she was popping and grunting a lot while we were on it.  Hope the lows stay low and we can keep what we've built so far!

Pretty slow over the last weekend.  Cold and windy this weekend so that should be fun.

Been putting the smackdown on some crappie and gills the last 4 times out. Every place I've been to we did very well! Both miss river and IA lakes. Just have to put the effort in to drill holes and find active fish. I will say that the fish are in full on winter patterns. Suspending over deep water structure and sharp breaks. Plastics bounced on their noses is producing very well. The guys sitting and jigging bottom all day around me are getting skunked.

Kept 35 keepers yesterday, mix of 10-11" crappies and 8-9" gills.

Have to say I am getting tired of eating fish, think I'll play C&R from now on.

Good luck to all who venture out in this upcoming cooold weather!

Nice!  I think I'll head over to LG lake tomorrow after work and see what I can do.  Still new to ice fishing and trying to figure things out.

I'll be out there Sunday. Probably be on the main lake though, never fished it but I'm in need for some new water. Getting tired of fishing the same places. Heard the gills are still tiny and the crappies are 8-9". Should be fun to just catch some fish... cold weather and long walk won't be fun though.

LG is not worth it IMO. I don't know anybody that has ever done any good during the ice season let alone open water. I used to fish it all the time and caught some really nice fish out of there but not for the last 5-6 years.
