Hickory Grove
« on: Dec 29, 2014, 08:13 PM »
I was out fishing over by the boat ramp today. 4 inches of ice and popping. Caught a largemouth and about a dozen green sunfish. I'm just happy to be on the ice again.   ;D

Good to hear, I might try to make it over on Thurs or Fri. (but I'll be alone so iffy ice isn't my ideal option)  4" now is a good sign though

7" of ice near south boat ramp. Not safe on north end. Open water by island.

There is only 5" of ice on the lake. There is still thin ice just west of the beach. Be safe and check the ice.

Fished just east of the beach this morning and was on 4.5-6 inches depending on where I drilled. Bite was a little slower than yesterday, but still fair.

Anyone been out on Hickory this week with the nice weather. Just wondering how the ice is doing and how much snow is on the lake.

Looked like a lot of snow on the lake yesterday and no one out on it.

The gills have seemed pretty finicky for me as well.  Also be careful SE of the island as that was the last place to freeze over.  We are headed out later today to give it a try.

I was out at Hickory Grove today. The water wasn't quite as clear as last week but could still use my camera. The crappies were biting all day where I was near a brush pile in about 25FOW. Most we're 91/2 inches.Largest I caught was 10 1/2.

Caught just enough for dinner tonight, bite was pretty slow and light.  Saw well over 100 deer in the fields on the way home. Was nice to see that a few decent bucks made it through the year.

Fished Hickory Grove today from about noon until 2. Kept 13 gills, caught a bunch more small ones though one I kept was about 9 1/2". Most were around 7. Soft biters all of 'em. Gotta watch the tip of the rod close to get them. Was hoping to get into some crappies but they must have been the ones just looking  ;D

Since this will be my first time up that way, is there any spots we should not venture due to thin ice?

People are pretty much going anywhere. I had close to 12" yesterday and 10+" where I was last weekend.

We found anywhere from 9-13" on Monday but like Hickory always is, it varied greatly depending upon where you were.  Fishing was slow, fish not at all aggressive- took a lot of coaxing to get bit.

I was there from 11-12:30pm on 10 inches of ice.  I found the biters down tight to the brush.  Had several fish come up for a look away from the brush, but not until I fished down into the brush did I catch about a dozen nice gills on a tungsten jig and waxies.
