South Bay Lake Champlain
« on: Dec 23, 2014, 08:24 AM »
I am planning a trip up to south bay later in January.  Does anyone have any suggestions for a bait store in the area?  We are hoping to target pike so we would like somewhere that has big bait.  If you have any other suggestions on where to fish in that area, what species we should/can target, or any other tips it would be appreciated.  Thanks in advanced.

Honey's bait shop and South Bay bait and Tackle are both on Route 4 right in the middle of Whitehall. I like Honey's because I get a kick out of the old miserable coot running the place. Don't whisper a word of politics unless you've got 3 hours.
Big bait in this area is luck of the draw. They SHOULD have big bait that time of year, but it's always up to chance.
I had a few tough years fishing pike there. I hit South Bay when I'm in panfish mode now.
If you have kids with you. You're not going to want to run all pike bait. You may have a flagless day. I'd mix up a few tipups for panfish just for the sake of action and jig your butt off moving every 5 minutes if you're not catching.
The angle of the dangle is directly proportionate to the heat of the beat.

I usually stop at Honey's also. He is good with the kids, but don't bring up politics. I find he is a little more likely to have big bait, but I have been up there many times when neither have any. Depending on the direction you are coming in from, fish307 is on the beginning of rt149 in Lake George.
Like prchslyr I have not had much luck with pike the last 2 years. Panfishing is good.

I am with two buddies who can handle a flagless day if we are running mostly big bait.  However, if you have suggestions for better pike spots in the area I'd appreciate the info.  Please PM me if you don't want to announce it to the masses.

Thanks for the info on the bait shops as well.  I won't be discussing politics while getting some.

I am traveling from Western Mass.  We plan on staying in the Glen Falls area since we know some people from that area.

Does the 15 tip up regulation for Champlain include south bay?  I know you can only fish it with a NY license but I don't want to look like a moron and setup 15 tips if only 5 are allowed.

Where in Ti? Ferry launch? In front of Fort View? Never had much luck in either place, but it's been a few years.

Sunday he had fatheads, med shiners, and some pike bait. He was out of spikes.

Are there any Bait-shops in Ti?

I could be wrong but I think Honey's is open. It's just not in the same location. I talked with the owner a few weeks back and he said that he moved to where he first had a bait shop. It's somewhat close to the other location I just forget where.

The old shop is a few doors down from that sub shop in Whitehall.
I used to really like that old place. It would be cool if he went back there just for nostalgia's sake.

He (Leonard Field) is plenty alive.  It was his wife who passed away a year or two ago.  His new shop is behind/below the old Mason's Hall just past the last stoplight as you leave Whitehall headed North towards South Bay on Rt. 22.  It's across the street from a big church that sits up above the road a bit.

Tight lines,
Bob

Further up? Ti? Crown Point? Port Henry? I'm not sure how Bulwagga Bay is doing but when I lived there it was primarily a place to fish for perch through the ice. It's been a while since I fished Bulwagga, however. Maybe there are toothy critters in there.
