most remote lake?
« on: Dec 21, 2014, 02:35 AM »
Just curious how hard core some people are. What is the most remote place you've ever ice fished up here, and how was the fishing?
I haven't been out that far. My farthest ice fishing trip was to George Lake near Delta Junction. Not too far but it did involve a bit of planning to get there. It was an amazingly beautiful day marred by breaking the auger before we got to fish, beer leaking all over my digital camera (ruined), zero fish, and a broken reel by the end of the trip. As disastrous as it was, I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

A fishing buddy and I went into a remote high country lake last winter.  It was about a 4 hour drive from Fairbanks and then a 18 mile snowmachine ride into the lake.  We stayed there for 3 days.

It took us a little while to figure out the lake because it was so deep.  We thought our vexilars were not working until another friend of ours came in the following day and told us the lake was so deep, the vexilars were not able to penetrate the depth.  At any rate, the fishing was okay once we figured it out.  There are some monster lakers in there but there is also many smaller ones as well.  Also a very healthy population of landlocked sockeye salmon.  Not going to name the lake as it took us a few years to figure out how to get into it.  Here are a few pics.

I dont think you can get anymore remote than the Far North for ice fishing - Hotham Inlet - Sheefish (You have to fly to get there, Kotzebue -33 miles above the arctic circle, then take a snow machine or ATV about out of town on Hothman Inlet or Selawik Lake.) We took a 40 minute snow machine ride this last April and found good fishing on the Eastern shore line of Hotham.

Not only is it a unique place to go visit, sheefish are huge and plenty to harvest, they taste better than pacific halibut (I brought back 50 lbs of filets in April) expect 4 to 6 feet of ice, and depths of 3 to 25 feet, brackish water and catches of flounder, bullhead, and sculpin are common. paul caught a norther pike this last trip.

Best time to go is April- May, and fishing normally can be done within walking distance of Kotzebue by May.

That sounds super BA! To cap any remote trip off like that with good fillets is the icing on the cake. I'm pretty envious of you guys, but it definitely gives me something to day dream about. Awesome video as always!

Alaska outdoorsman,
Thats funny, you not sharing a fishing spot. Youve never had any problems before. Why so secretive? I thought you were the bold?

Looks like Tanada lake or copper lake but I may be wrong.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

You are mistaken as I have not named any lake I fished on in my posts this year.  I think you have me confused with that other guy.

i haven't been real remote.
We do like to go fishing for Burbot up resurrection pass. We rent one of the cabins from the forest service.
It is a real fun trip and we usually catch a few Burbot and a few lake trout.

My heart has not changed, it is my mind.  With the early onset of alzheimers and mild dementia, I just don't remember all that well anymore. You have a Merry Christmas and happy New year.

You know when your no longer belong in the circle, when those that once called you a "friend" at one time now refer to you as "that other guy"

Just for clarity - although I have gone fishing with AlaskaOutdoorsmen several times, he is correct in saying he has never been part of Alaskan Salmon Slayers in any kind of official capacity. Although some of his photos appear on the website, and in print from experiences shared fishing in Alaska.

I do not have a crew - I am part of crew

By crew I didnt mean "offical" member. Simply that he was a frequent fishing partner. Do you guys still fish together?

Chris N, do you have any pictures? I'm a scenery type guy.
