Auger Speed
« on: Dec 20, 2014, 03:30 PM »
Hey guys, I just got my Strikemaster Mag 2000 running and did a load test this morning on about 15" of ice.  It did the job in 1 min 20 sec.  That seems a little slow.  I know the chipper blades run a little slower.  I'm not worried about winning any speed records here.  If I were, I would buy a new auger.  I just want to make sure it is running the way it should be.  What you guys think? is this too slow?  What kind of augers do you have and how fast do they run?

Don't know what size auger your using, but in a minute and 20 seconds i believe i could cut thru 15" of ice with my hand lazer auger....and i mean by hand . Almost a minute and a half is a long time for 15" of ice, imo.

Sound like a long time, if its bigger than a 6" might take that long!

Seems pretty long, sounds like it time for a new blade.

Awful, awful, slow...my 'Mo did 18" in about 14 secs in a race with my cousin's 'Mo. That's with razor sharp blades.....time to sharpen those blades/point?  ???

That's what I was afraid of.  I have always owned hand augers before so I wasn't sure how fast they should cut.  My friend's Jiffy and other power augers I have used seemed to drill much faster.  The engine doesn't seem to rev up very high at wide-open.  It sounds more like a lawn mower than a chainsaw.  It has a new carburetor and a new 8" blade.  I guess I will check the compression again.

Hm, compression may cause it to not start, but if it runs, it seems to me, top end speed reduction is caused by things other than low compression, like binding, fuel flow restriction, air restriction, loose mounting of carb allowing air leak-lean mixture of air-fuel ratio.      ??? ???

It starts up on the first pull everytime, Idaho.  I don't think it is fuel restriction.  maybe the top-end is fine.  Maybe it is something else.  It idles fine.  Maybe it could be the blade angle.  Or, maybe I am not pushing down on the auger hard enough.

DON'T PUSH DOWN on it, Wyo!!! Let it pull itself down, that will just cause possible blade damage as in changing the angle of attack..... :o  Make sure that point is really sharp along with the blades, too, as that pierces the ice before the blades chew through.

Oh no !  Never push, as the weight of the auger should be plenty !!!!    :woot:

While it's running and you open it up to wide open, does it get to top speed within one second or less,  with no load ?

It gets up to top speed in less than a second.  I guess I knew not to force it.  It doesn't pull itself down though.  If I don't give it any pressure, it just spins around.

I think I will file the point and see if that helps.  It already seems pretty sharp though.

I would think even if its not hitting speed, if the blades were fine it would cut not spin, that is with no down pressure applied. I would expect bogging down for lack of torque due to speed would be a factor but just spinning?

If you have to push on it you're gonna kill it.  If your blades are sharp it should basically pull itself through the ice and you just hold on.
I run a HT Polar Fire 53cc 10" auger and I cut through 15 inches of ice in under 20 seconds without any issues at all. I believe the mag 2000 is a smaller engine but it should still cut faster than that.  How's the motor run?

The engine doesn't bog down at all.  The point is actually pretty sharp.  I guess the next step is to check for a bent shaft or flights.

Ya know what I'm going to check first?  I put the blade on top instead of bottom.  Maybe I need to put it on the bottom.

Guy's I was cutting threw 14" today with my new Eskimo Silvertip Hand auger in about 16 Seconds. No joke it rips the ice. 28 Turns and I was through. Gas augers everywhere around me were taking 30 plus seconds. I had a guy come up and ask about my auger. Same guy that told me I caught the only fish he saw on the ice for the day.He said that thing drilled faster then his gas auger. He had the Eskimo Z51 which I also have. I think these guy's just need to know how to sharpen their blades. My Z51 rips it.

My hand auger drills pretty fast too, it just wears me out after a few holes.  I put the blade on the bottom.  I will test it out on the lake tomorrow after my duck hunt and let you know.  Thanks for the help.

Yea it will not cut at all. Blade goes on top with a strikemaster chipper.

Okay, thanks Kevin.  I had it right to begin with.  That makes sense, since the old one was on top.  I will have to check for a bent shaft or flighting.  It has to be the blade angle to prevent it from digging in.
