Auger issues...
« on: Dec 18, 2014, 07:23 PM »
Hey IS-

Looking forward to a new season!

So I bought a Mako M43 8" a few years back and its performed really well so far...
After a summer in the basement it fired right up but it sounds like the tranny needs oil- its loud and I can hear the gear splines.

But I can't find any info on whether the gear oil needs to be topped off occasionally? Its sealed and I don't see any oil stains on my concrete floor so I don't think its been leaking.

Just don't want to burn it up.

Hoping someone on here has some advice.

Thanks!

I believe those gearboxes are packed with grease, which can dry out over time. It's possible but I would doubt it if you bought it new a few years ago? Pretty sure you can open them up, clean the dry grease- which is probably caked on the side of the housing and not in the gear splines- and repack the grease. But I have never done it on my Jiffy, pretty sure it hasn't been in it's 10 year or so life.

No, doesn't seem to get any better after warm up...

Thanks Doctorgee- maybe I'll split the gear case and see how it looks.

Will report back
