Pack Basket I Made
« on: Dec 18, 2014, 06:54 PM »
I'm anxious to get out on the ice to use my new pack basket that I made last spring and summer with the guidance and help of my 93-year old grandfather. It's a genuine brown ash basket. My grandfather and uncle get the logs and pound out the strips and cut them all to size. I was glad to be able to spend the time with my grandfather and see the process through. It was a lot of work but I'm really happy with how it came out and the sentimental value is priceless. I just need to get some straps for it and slap a Denmar liner in it and I'll be good to go!

Looks real good! Nice job. My grandmother used to make them and I have a few she made. I don't use them anymore, but they are at the camp on display. :) it's alot of work.

Sweet basket. How long did that take you? Great post.
May God bless and keep you always, may your wishes all come true.
May you always do for others and let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars and climb on every rung,
May your hands always be busy, may your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation when the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful, may your songs always be sung.
May you stay forever young.

The other 8 are the work of my grandfather. Once he has all the staves and strips cut to size and soaking he can put them together fairly quickly. I'm not sure exactly sure how many hours I have in mine, I started it in April and worked on it for 2 days straight. Then I didn't get up to visit again until June and worked on it for a day and brought it home and finished it. I had to take it down half way several times to reshape it to get it exactly how I wanted it. There's a lot of wait time between soaking and drying when working with the strips. It's quite a process but well worth it in the end!

THAT IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOuT!! in todays world we often pay to get the things that we want/ need and thats okay but the knowledge of doing things yourself and being able to be self sustainable is really the key to improving this world, keeping skills and trades alive, and also when the bleep hits the fan, give you the edge over the other guy... really awesome to see

As nice as the craftsmanship is, the fact that you still have a 93 year old grandfather to impart this knowledge on you is the real victory here. You are so lucky, cherish every moment. @)
