Best Line for Jigging Gills / Crappie / Perch
« on: Dec 18, 2014, 08:47 AM »
Looking to respool, what kind of line you guys using and # for pannies.  I like super lines for soft water, but not hard.  Thinking of regular Mono or Flow.  Tried to get Suffex clear 3# at Cabelas, but they were out, only had the orange.  Suggestions please.  I did a search, but anything with Jig or Line in it is all over the place.  I also looked thru here and the Equipment section and did not see a post.

I like  Power Pro. No stretch makes it easier to set the hook on light biters.  Extremely small diameter and great sensitivity.

I didn't want to go braid due to icing up when I hole hop.  If I kept in the shanty, it might be a great option.

I fish outside and move a lot...the superbraids seem to ice up worse, so I use 2lb mono.

  • Ditch the bobbers and get a 'tight line'

Stren Gold here....I'm a tight liner and its the most visible line there is.  I will tie a floro leader on occasionally if clear water is in play.

OK, I got impatient.  Ordered some 2# Northland bionic ice line in blue (would rather had either clear all the way or green/yellow and put a leader on) for hole hopping and some 5# Power Pro for in the shack (most likely put a leader on it).  Thanks guys, does not look like a real standout preference out there.

3 lb micro Ice, steel color
DAM mono from in thin diameters from fish USA, really good stuff open and hard water. Thin and very strong.

Just got some 3lb suffix. Never used it. So you guys liked this line??
I have never used 2lb as I'm worried about loosing fish or n accidental catch on something I wasn't expecting then loosing it.

^This! I use ASSO New Micron 3 in 3#. I started with the 8oz line, which is absolutely ridiculously thin, literally thinner than hair, but I lost a lot of jigs when the fish hit the ice under the hole. I now use the 3#, which is still only .005. Switched to it last season after using a few different lines. Not sure I'll ever switch again for panfish.

2# micro ice, sufix ice magic, and p-line fluroice all have equally worked well for me. Went back to ice magic this year because it was the cheapest at my local sporting goods store ($3)

I've been pretty happy with P Line fluorocarbon ice line.

Been using this in 3lb this year and very pleased.  I don't have a shelter and this line hasnt frozen up on me in single digit temps yet
