Say-- if a gal were to host an ice fishing derby, (and we actually had ice), what advice would you give her?

I'd like to know your general thoughts on this topic, but specifically ideas of fish categories you'd like to see, and thoughts about prizes (other than money).

Bluegill, perch, crappie, pike, anonymous. Then raffle off shanties and cash awards. With partners. 8 fish max

Partners (parent/kid) are popular so far on this thread.

As for fish categories, the five you mentioned are well suited for the lakes I have in mind. What would y'all think about just leaving it to game fish and pan fish categories? It would help me with issues distinguishing fish species.

What do y'all think about a invasive species reward?

Or to keep it super simple with the longest, shortest and the most fish caught (perhaps a 4 hour tourney)?

Possibly CPR....catch, photo & release. If there is a big fish category....a photo with tape measure is a good idea. I hate seeing a big fish killed for this category.

Kris, I have some left over wooden yard sticks that Ace Hardware donated. They are great for a big fish picture category like pike or bass.

What would be the invasive category? Like whoever brings out the most zebra mussels?

Well, I don't have the reg book in front of me but I would presume Asian Carp, white perch, and snakeheads. Personally, I would rather catch zebra mussels!

Zebra mussel derby! On a more serious note I'd like to suggest that it take place on a Sunday or less likely a Monday as they're my days off

I would be willing to chip in a few ice flies and a few boxes of spinners I build for prizes. You'll get to see some of them at the January 25 derby. Hey, I'm a nice guy

Hey don't forget Muskies! They spear them like carp in other states. Doesn't get much more invasive than those dang things. Maybe I'm getting Invasive confused with elusive..

I think the kids would love hooking into one of these. I'd be glad to attend to show them some invasive recipes. Lamprey are tasty wrapped in bacon and smoked with some cherry wood.

I guess you can wrap anything in bacon and make it edible LOL

I like the idea of this http://www.iceduels.com . I'm not to sure how they pull it all off in one day but if some one could do I think it would be a lot of fun . My be best to limit the entries to 25 to 50 to make sure you could make it all happen in one day .
