Lake trout help
« on: Dec 16, 2014, 04:05 PM »
Have always wanted to catch a lake trout through the ice. I live in North west ohio where would be the closest place to ice fish for these guys. Not looking for secret spots just a start. I'm a big walleye  fishermen so any tips on lures rods and line would also be appriciated.

Higgins and Crystal will be you best bet. They are both slow to freeze due to depth. Most years you are looking at late January.

Higgins Lake starting in Late January-April.
Gull lake also has them, however I have had no luck catching them through the ice.

The closest lake to catch a lake trout out of would be Maceday. However that lake takes a long time to freeze. Your best chance of catching a lake trout through the ice is up in Caseville. They are usually there early ice but a boat came through this past Sunday and broke it all up.

20 feet from shore. They are in the shallows gorging themselves on minnows and shad.

There used to be a small tourney out of Caseville that fished strictly lake trout and it was held in Feb. so I would watch the various web sites about fishing for them there.

the fall of the air plane jig is a tad different. check them out here and read about them in the book ice fishing secrets by infishermen staff.  i think it is how the jig is used more or less then any thing. there is a certain way to jig air plane jigs for lakers  it in the book... i am sure other stuff will work this is what i know to use you could also use tip ups just a head up...

http://www.northlandtackle.com/Category/main.taf?cat=17

swedish pimple may work so will large tube  jigs  and cicada lures or  blade jigs will work too...

Got a report from a friend who lives in Caseville....the ice in the river mouth has refrozen after the fishing boat went thru last weekend and they are catching lake trout.  He didn't know the thickness but said there were 8 guys out.
