Tanaka 270 primer not working
« on: Dec 15, 2014, 06:45 PM »
I have a 2008 Tanaka 270 and am having issues with the cold starting this year, seems the primer is not working I prime and choke the same as last year and it won't fire.  One quick shot of starting fluid and it fires and runs as normal.. is this the normal cold starting problem I have read about.  When i press the primer I see it shooting fuel back into the tank.  So I am guessing it is working as it should.  Any thoughts?

Are you holding throttle all the way when you have it choked? That is the standard for my cold starts...

Here's my cold starting routine:

-press the bulb until you see fuel within it
-push choke lever all the way to the left and pull the cord up to three times, it usually starts within this cycle and then I'll push the lever to half choke
-if by chance it doesn't grab in the first three strokes, push the lever to half choke and it will usually catch first pull
-let engine run for a few minutes while I'm setting up my tent and then push choke lever all the way to the right

If the auger's been used already that day or it's warm out, I generally skip the second step above.

I will try the wide open throttle trick and see if that works if not I will try making the adjustment mentioned in the previous post.  Just never had an issue before.  Thanks for the replies

If it's shooting fuel back into the tank with the primer button, then the small rubber one way flaps are broken or dried out. Had the same problem on a few weed wackers.

If you do adjustment you won't have to hold it open. Could be a bad thing if it gets away from you on start. Just heat up a nail push it in the plastic cap let it cool  pull the cap out and adjust the High speed  adjustment.
