Trapping shiners
« on: Dec 14, 2014, 02:30 PM »
im looking to start trapping shiners this year. I have the minnow trap already, what should I be looking for in a pond as to where to place it? Any rules and regulations for trapping?

Thanks ahead of time

You're late. Keep looking, you might have some for next winter. Look up the regs on the MassWildlife website.

Couple handfuls of dogfood and place it just outside the edge of a weedline, shiners can't find the opening to well if it's buried in the weeds.  If you're using a store bought trap you'll be fine, just don't go and try to widen the openings or anything.  You're probably going to have to wait until next season.
It's like tailgating with the possibility of catching a fish!

Thank you guys, I meant to start sooner but just lost track of time. Got through about an inch of ice and through it out with some dog food today near the weeds. Hopefully tomorrow there will be something. Ill have to search previoud topics I remember seeign somethign a while ago about it.
