Frabill straight line reel.
« on: Dec 14, 2014, 12:56 PM »
I've seen some straight line reels in previous posts. I just ordered one,and was wondering if any particular set up method was preferred?

I set mine up with mostly dacron and then depends on what you are jigging for. For bass/pickeral I use power pro 10lb ice line to avoid line break. For pan fish or trout I use seagear flouro, 6lb for trout and 4 lb for pannies. I have found these are great for jigging...limited line twist however not very good for dead sticking and takes longer to drop the jig in deep water.
A bad day of ice fishing is better than any day at work!

That is a great reel. One major benefit of those reels is minimal line twist so feel free to experiment with fluorocarbon more than you would with a spinning reel.

I've  been converting all my jig rods to level wind casting reels.  Those reels are just out of my price range.

I just had this conversation yesterday with a guy at our shop and he talked about these reels. They (Frabills's) are made by Eagle Claw and they look basically identical to the Eagle Claw reel, other than Frabill's name on them. They are less than half the price of Frabill's in blue or black for less than $28.00 (reel only). Save yourself a bunch of money and buy the Eagle Claw (same thing). We have them, as well as the reels on the poles (package combo) in light and ultra light. I was told these reels were tuff to locate last winter, so we loaded up on them this year. My friend just set two of them up for me yesterday as well. Awesome reels at a very good price. You hit that little button the the side and it goes down pretty easy and fast. Even a small crappie jig goes down. Really slick. You could buy 2 Eagle Claws for less than 1 with the Frabill name on it, plus have $5-10 left over. Oh, and they have the long shaft on them to give you room for your knuckles.

Can these be converted to a right hand retrieve? ( where the rod is held in the left, and you reel with the right) I've fished for a long time now and still don't know which is which!

Every inline I've looked at are left hand retrieve... I'd like to get a couple

The reels are $26.99 each by themselves, or you can buy a combo in various colors like those pictured below for $39.99-$44.99.  They only seem to have a left handed crank on them.  When holding the pole with your right hand the crank is on the left side.  As you can see, they are basically the same reel as Frabill, because Eagle Claw makes the reels for them.  If you are looking for other jig poles we have tons and tons of them from ultra light rods to heavy tougue rods and everything in between.  A great opportunity to get a nice inline reel and save a bunch of money.  These two poles with reels in the pictures below were set up the other day for my daughter and myself.  One of them has 100 yards of line on it with no problems.

The eagle claw reels look like the  frabill 261 reel. The 371 is the upgrade to the frabill 261. I think it has a better bearing and retrieval and is a little different design but is 70 dollars. The 261s where selling at cabelas for $29.99 I think. I have four of the 261 and I like them for the price that I paid for them.  They are nice due to having a push button free spool for letting line out. They can be switched to right hand retrieval but changing the bearing placement direction. It is pretty simple to do with just a Phillips head screwdriver and a pair of pliers. There is a Video on Youtube where Brosdahl shows how to convert them.

Here is what the Frabill 261 looks like. https://fishingurus.com/frabill-straight-line-261-ice-reel-6707.html

Thanks for the info. A guy just came in to get bait and had one on his reel on his pole turned the other way. Your right they are not exactly the same reel, but very close. I believe Eagle Claw makes the reels for Frabill. It is nearly a $40-$50 savings per reel. They work really well. Looks like we are less than Cabela's.

Alright thanks. I'll have to pick up a couple. Really going to try and step up my jigging game this year. Late last season I started leaving traps home and was very successful, it can only get better from there.

I have the frabill 241 with the dial drag. The videos available to switch to right hand retrieve are the eagle claw and a frabill 261. Both are star drags. Anyone switched a 241 over? [URL=http://s1140.photobucket.com/user/Gjohns61/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20141217_175908.jpg.html]]

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I have four more jig sticks to convert, so if I like it, I'll definitely take a closer look at the EC reels.
I've never fished Sebago or the surrounding area, I may have to get up that way this season, if so I'll swing in to Sebago Bait to check out the shop.

I have 4 eagle claw inlines on my other rods. I swapped all of mine over to RH. Pretty smooth drag with a little reel butter. I love them.

I picked up a tear drop over the summer, can't wait to try it out this winter.
6.2:1

I've got a 241. It's a little heavy for my liking. I use it on my jaw jacker rod.

The only rod I have without an inline is my touge rod. That has a bait caster on it mainly for the line capacity of the braid.

I have swapped a 241 over to RH, and it works as the reel is supposed to. I mainly use it in shallow water due to the lack of a freespool function, but I like the way it works otherwise.

Corey, you're going to love the teardrop. I like how it fits in my hand. I had 13Fishing send me an extra spool so that I could rig one up light for panfish and one with braid for togue. Extremely smooth reel and it cranks like none other.
