Flashers
« on: Dec 13, 2014, 04:58 PM »
I know this topic is brought up every year but this is the year for me to get one. Let's hear some opinions about what you guys like and you would consider the best bang for your buck. Any and all comments are appreciated.

Just got a FLX28 but have not got it wet yet. I had a FL18 with the deep water conversion and it was flawless, so I have very high hopes for the FLX28.

I love my showdown dual beam. Whatever you buy, make sure it has dual beam and adjustable zoom capabilities. Those are, in my opinion, the most important features.
To jig or not to jig... That is the question.

I agree with the posts above that the 28 is pretty tough to beat.  I've had an Ice 45 for years and I also like.

I am leaning in the Vexilar direction. I've used that brand with a buddy a few times and I loved our results.

When I worked in the fishing dept at Scheels in Billings I was able to demo a lot of the vexilars.  Good units.  Really it depends on your price point and what features are important to you.  The most basic flasher is a serious upgrade over nothing!

Buddies have both Marcums and Vexilars. Only thing that sways me one way or the other is the issue I read the Marcums having. Ive never had any issues with my Vexilars. On the other hand it sound like Marcum customer service really strives to resolve any issues you might have.

If you buy one of the new ones on the market you absolutely won't get a bad one. They are all good. Just depends on $$$$$.
good Luck.

If your going into the top of the line units, I would suggest the LX6 or Lx7/9 from marcum. You will love having options beyond the flasher. Most of the problems you heard about marcum come from motor issues. The Lx series does not have a motor. I have owned both vex and marcum, though my vex was a lower end model, and i would recommend the options of the LX series every time.

what are the advantages of the different zoom zones vs seeing from the top to the bottom in one range?

Whatever you get, make sure that it has bottom zoom on it. I think the best dollar for dollar finder is the FL-18. I'm not saying that it is better than the 20, 22 or 28 but you can get them cheaper and it has all the basic features that you need. The best deal that I found on them is when big R has their store wide sales(Black Friday and this coming Wed. night).

I had the showdown, and recently switched to the Marcum lx3 tc.  I just like the color better.  You can't beat the price @ $350 right now.

I own an LX9 and an FL20.  My fishing partner has 2 vexilars, a humminbird, and an lx7.  It's nice having all the features of the LX9 in a single unit, but it definitely is not as consistent as the vexilars and the battery life is not near as long.  Out of the 6 flashers we have between the two of us, I think the fl20 is the best bang for the buck.  Scheels has the fl20 pro pack on sale now for $420.  The fl28 looks really nice, but I don't think a digital display warrants an extra $200.  The digital display on the marcums has lag time on occasion, (especially when the battery starts to get lower) and they are prone to interference when other flashers are nearby.  Overall, the LX9 is my go-to flasher because I have way more features with it, but most people aren't going to spend over $1000 on a flasher.  You'll catch way more fish and have way more fun no matter which one you buy.

Humminbird Ice 35 or Vexilar FL-8.  Frankly, my advice would be to save up another $100 this month and then buy a little nicer one.  Both will help you catch a lot of fish compared to not having one though!

After my research it sounds like the FL 20 will be a great fit for me. Can anyone explain what ice-ducer size cone they like the best and why?

I called Scheels in billings today and they sold out of that deal mentioned in previous post and will be selling the FL 20 at regular price again. Thanks for the heads up on the sale though!

Vexilar fl8.  It's bullet proof and I think you should be able to find a brand new one for right around $300.  As 4EVER406 stated above I have upgraded multiple times but I always have my fl8 with me on every trip as a back up because I know I will never have a problem with it.

Just ordered my FL 20 w/ pro view for $509 was the cheapest I could find if anyone else is on the hunt. Now if ordering some good ice was just as easy. Thanks again to all of you for your words of wisdom.

EBay has some good deals for the thrifty shopper. Not sure of the price, but the Vexilar fl208 is a good starter.
