Navionics Chip
« on: Dec 11, 2014, 03:19 PM »
I just bought a new Ice machine Elite-5. What is the best Navionics with detail that I should look at. I mainly fish bays on Lake Ontario, and Oneida lake.

It's not a Humminbird unit. It's a Lowrance unit.

I chose that one cause it's the only one that works here and at my camp. Plus that's the chip everyone told me to get.

Which Elite 5 do you have? HDI, Chirp ? There is a link to the Navionics Compatibility guide in an above link. Look at it if you have an Elite that can run the Nav+ the best choice you get the High Def SonarCharts and it is not area specific. You download the area or lakes you fish. Navionics has a online map previewer called the web app look for a tab on the top of the page, zoom in on the lake you fish click on the sonar icon lower left for the SonarCharts view

I have a  premium east coast for ice and that one is an 08 and a 2010 in the boat , platinum is a little better and the newer ones are more detailed , I like the nav chip , but that is JMO

Guys - looking at buying this unit.  Quick question from somebody with no clue.  Does the unit come with any maps already installed?  I was under that assumption from everything I read.

It does come with a base map but the detail is poor, usually govt. charts at 3 and 5 ft contours

Platinum won't work in the Elite only HDS

cny, take a look at the Navionics USA app for iPhone/iPads, I use it extensively here in Virginia on soft water and especially on ice on the southern end of Lake Champlain, Shoreham, VT area.  Great detail, routinely updated, I do my research/planning with my iPad (bigger screen), I go to the spots I want to fish with my iPhone (puts me right on them and it is easier to watch/follow than the Elite 5 when your trudging out on the ice), then I put my Elite 5 HDI to work, which I cannot say enough good about.  Great combo!

Why navionics? why not just upgrade to the Lowrance maps? http://www.lowrance.com/en-US/Products/Mapping/
That insight genesis pro is way better than any navionics chart with community edit

I am running an Elite 5 Gen 1 combo unit with Navionics Hotmaps premium micro-chip for soft water season. From what I've experienced with the system is the lake maps are very inaccurate. The lakes I've run it on are supposed to be in what they are labeling as HD and most underwater structure displayed is way bad. Numerous structure is not marked or off by as much as 200 feet. They say not to use it for navigation and I believe them. I cannot even trust it to find structure of any kind. My next step is to try to use the chip in my H2O to see which system is the problem.  The combination is worthless as is. I like the Elite 5 however.
According to Cabelas, some of the newer Lowrance units are Lakemaster compatible. I see that as good.
I checked out the Lowrance lake map list and there are very few lakes in Mn that have anything but shoreline mapped. Make sure to check out the list before you purchase.

I run the elite 5 and my maps show in hd with 1 foot contours and is very accurate! I have a expedition c hand held from lowrance with a older lakemaster chip and it was so bad i was mad i spent 100 dollars on it!

The best thing you can do with any of these maps regardless of brand is try to get a look at the waters you fish using your model of plotter if possible. Many retailers will pull chips out of packaging and put them in a machine for you to take a look at. In my Lowrance units I use both Lowrance and Navionics mapping, depending on where I'm fishing.

No single company will have the best mapping for every body of water and mapping changes quickly with companies like Navionics adding new data daily.

Try before you buy, if possible...

Just a quick aside the Navionics app free and the mapping is cheaper 10-20 bucks and works excellent, constant updates and if your just trying to get to a spot it is awesome. I have a Lakemaster chip I think its the last Lowrance compatible one in my HDS-5 and I find myself using my phone because the detail is better and you get the community edit sonar maps which I believe is put together when someone uses the website to put together a side-scan sonar map.

Just to add one more thing about Navionics, like mentioned before you can go to the Web App and preview the lake maps, just remember to click on the SonarIcon on the lower left corner fro the SonarCharts view which is part of the server evolving and improving contour maps. The SonartCharts view is available as an upgrade on the mobile app its called Nav+. And if you are running a Hotmaps Premium you can upgrade to Nav+ for 100.00 and you get free updates for a year. Just be sure to check the compatibility chart on the Navionics website to verify Nav+ will run in your sonar.(lower right corner)
