Tanaka 270 Cold Starting Ajustment
« on: Dec 09, 2014, 06:56 AM »
Tanaka Power Head hs adjustment. For those of you who have a Tanaka 270 power head here is how to get at the adjustment screw. Heat up a small nail and insert it in the plastic cap. Let it cool and then remove the cap. The adjustment screw is behind it. This will help with cold start problems. Only turn it out a small amount at a time.

What about replacement grommets for the lines that go into the gas tank? Mine leak so bad I could not use it last yr. Gas all over the place including in the hole. A real bummer cause the older I get I really appreciate the light weight feature instead of bring out one of the old faithful Jiffy's. :-\

You should be able to get those from a local small engine shop. They may have to order them. It most likely is not the grommet but the fuel lined have become brittle and shrink. Also a local shop.

Push or pull the fuel line through the grommet a hair.  If you pulled it out a little you'll see the ring(indent) from the grommet on the fuel line.
The new location should stop the fuel leak.

Thx guys you gave me two things to look for. I'll make sure of the fuel line first due to the ethanol and if it still leaks it's the grommets.

in the photo you posted is that when you have removed the plastic plug?  Mine looks like that now and I haven't removed anything.  Im guessing the white plastic thing in the center is the adjustment?

I went out and looked at mine again, It has definitely been messed with before, I bought the power head used and it looks like someone already tried this fix they also screwed up the head on the adjustment screw.  I guess I will stick to the wide open throttle trick!

Y That is why you use a small heated nail and let it set up. You then can remove the plastic insert.

For the guys that have done this how far would you say you backed it out?  I plan on turning in small increments as stated but just curious as to how far you backed it out before you started to notice it starting easier.  I don't want to over do it.  Thanks.

I have only made one adjustment and that was a 1/2 turn out to richen it up.

Just to confirm in bee's picture is that a pic of the adjustment screw exposed without the plastic cover? or is the plastic cover still inside with what appear to be 3 notches? Thanks.

I did the procedure and went 1/2 a half turn counterclockwise.  Here are a couple of pics I took of my set up:

Pic with the plastic piece covering the adjustment screw:

Pic with the plastic piece removed with the adjustment screw exposed:

Pic of nail with attached plastic piece, I used a heat gun to heat up the nail:

For those that have done this does are you re-installing the plastic cap or leaving it off? Will there be any problems by leaving it off?

No problems. It just covered that hidden adj. screw. That may have been a Cali. thing

Sounds good.  Thanks again Bee and thanks for the great pictures Blue Devil.  Cleared up my confusion.  How easy does it come out with the nail?

It comes out well with the nail just allow it to cool enough before you pull it out.
