Baitcast Reels?
« on: Dec 07, 2014, 03:07 PM »
So I really like using a baitcast reel for ice fishing but in cold temps it tends to freeze up.  Ive heard about cleaning as much of the grease out as possible but am curious if anyone else uses them and if there is a specific one that is recommended or easier to use in the winter??

Never used them on ice, but what if you used the same type of grease that they use in tip-up flag trip tubes?

fish USA has a special cold weather grease, and I am sure other companies have it also.  It would require removing all the old grease which means you would have to take the reel all apart, that's the easy part.Putting it all back together is the hard part. It's probably easier and cheaper to just buy a reel made for ice fishing.

Clean the reel and apply Teflon (PTFE) based grease/oil instead of petroleum based grease/oil.
