Week of the Lake Trout
« on: Nov 29, 2014, 12:46 PM »
My buddy and I spent a few days on the ice this week in pursuit of our favorite hardwater fish, the lake trout.  All fish released within seconds after photo.  All photos taken with an Iphone.

Nice Fish, what method of catching did you use?

We use electronics to determine depth and fish activity in the water column.  A 3" white tube with a 1/2 ounce jig head has been the most productive.  We start jigging from the bottom up.  When we mark a fish at a certain depth on the Vexilar, we real up to him and jig in hopes of getting him to bite.  The most exciting bites are when you are jigging at a certain depth and all of a sudden you see a fish on the Vexilar start to rise up to your jig.  The anticipation is thrilling.  You scoot up on the edge of your chair, you hold your rod and reel a little tighter and just slow flutter the jig in hope he will chomp it.  When you feel the bite and set the hook, the andrenaline is flowing.  Most of these fish take about 3-4 minutes to bring up.  They are so powerful when they make their runs.  We are usually fishing in 100-120 feet of water so they have a lot of lake to run.  Hope this helps.

Never fished lake trout and have a question. How do those fish survive being pulled from 100 feet of water? I know with the species of fish I target, they are pretty much done after 30 feet of water.

And great pics BTW.

Lake trout have a swim bladder that allows them to burp air.  That is why you will see air bubbles as they get close to the ice hole.  These fish survive very well.
