How to convert your Mora to a Lazer
« on: Nov 24, 2014, 10:02 PM »
Lazers seem to cut better/faster/easier.

Here's a link:         The kit for less than $30.00             You'll also need blades.

That is good to know, I have an old Mora hand auger. I never use it but if my Gas auger ever breaks down I will have it with me.

Well depends how you look at it. I needed to pick up a second set of blades. I needed a spare set of blades/back ups for the auger anyway. So, $20 shipped for the refurbished lazer blades wasn't really an additional cost. I would have had to buy a set of shaver blades otherwise. So I kinda figure I'll have a lazer auger for the cost of $70 ($40-eskimo auger-$30 for the kit.) If i like the lazer blades better (which i hope I do) I'll keep them on the auger, and use the shaver blades for back up. So since I have the other stuff and need to buy a second set of blades really the only additional cost is $30 for the kit. So.....$30 vs paying $80 for a lazer?

Yeah, that be right. It's not a cheaper way to get a Lazer. Unless you already have the shaver hand auger. Then you'll only have a savings if you get cheaper prices on things off ebay. By the time it's all said and done, you'd have into it what a lazer cost. What is kinda cool is when it is all said and done, you'll have a versital auger. It could be a 7 or 8 inch lazer or shaver. Not that it's a big deal, but kinda neat and flexible.

The real advantage is if you happen to have a mora with the offset handle. People say they never worked real good with the flat style blade. But with the stuff listed above should turn them into a fantastic auger that should drill easy

So is that an Eskimo Auger converted to the Lazer blades? It looks like the blades don't have much surface contact to the adapter. And if so wouldn't that cause damage faster?

I would thing those adapters bolted on are going to have to push chips and slush. That may be a problem.

Well Here is the review.

was a little nervous if the conversion was going to work on the Eskimo like it should. It was a close shave......It looked deceptive since the blades didn't touch the edge when mounted, but when I measured the blade tip to tip there was enough room.

I took it to a local pond and drilled 40 holes through around 8inches of ice. I'm impressed, the adaptors held up fine. Tight has a tiger in Austin Powers words. it threw shavings just like it did with the shaver blades. However, it cut FAST! Really fast. It like pulled you down it cut so fast. It grabs the ice and digs, way more the the shaver does. With the shaver, I'd have to put a little downward pressure on it to start it. With the lazer blades I didn't  need to put pressure on to start it. I'm really happy with it. It seemed to work the drill about the same has the shaver. The one thing that was a negative is the lazer tends to hang up a bit more on the break through vs the shaver. However they both tend to do it a bit. I had never been around a lazer style before, and now I can see why they charge a premium for the lazer.

Good concise review and clear photos.  Well done.

The biggest challenge I've found with Lazers is my feeble attempt to hold it up a little as "break-through" is sensed, miss it by 1/8th turn and the bone jarring kicks happen, ouch.

I now, after your review, have confidence to recommend this "Conversion Kit" .

Thanks.

Yes thanks for the great review. Breaking through at the bottom on some augers takes a little technique. But once you figure out your setup it should get easier.

Fantastic! Now there is something out there to bring grandpa's old mora auger to life again. I'm sure there will be some more good reviews before the ice season is over.

The hangup at the bottom of the hole is completely normal and happens with all lazers, so don't worry there.

Yeah I got a little better at judging the break threw to try and adjust for it, but man those lazer blades just chew threw.

What's going on here?  Are you buying Lazer blades and putting them on a Mora hang auger. ???

Sort of. I Bought an adaptor off ebay to make an eskimo shaver (Basicly a red mora) into a lazer.

Well got a cover today for the 7in lazer blades. I'm really impressed with the cover vs the shaver blade cover. The shaver blade cover I had would always come off. The lazer cover seems to be made of stronger material, & holds onto the auger much better.
