First Ice report, got a few walleye.
« on: Nov 23, 2014, 08:31 AM »
Hi all,

Got out for the first ice session of the season. Went down to Eagle lake and edged nervously out onto our walleye grounds, squeaky bum time is what I call it.

There was more than enough ice, and with the lack of snow it was hard, black ice. Thickest ice we found was 8", thinnest was 4", note to self….tread with caution, its not uniform thickness, ice picks on.

Within minutes of setting up on the edge of the drop from a 14' deep bay, Amanda got two and missed them both. Tyler then went over and set the hook on the same rod on the third bite and pulled up a nice 21"er. Sucked for him because there is an 18"-23" slot on Eagle Lake.

It was pretty slow and we ended up with only 4 fish on the ice, 2 nice 17"ers, and a couple of slot fish at 20" and 21". Was warm out though and at -2C with no wind and no snow on the ice it felt like we were fishing in March!

Another highlight for me was having my chocolate Lab out on the ice, Roloff behaves exactly the same way as when we are shore fishing, waiting attentively at the hole for the fish to come up, and standing guard of each one as it lay on the ice.

Hopefully getting out on Wednesday or Thursday. No snow and sub -20C temps next week should see much better ice this year and early access to the ice road.

Here's some pics and video of our little outing.

my turns coming.  we went for a tour this weekend.  Scugog was like swish cheese but mostly frozen lots  of water.  and same with most the other lakes between Uxbridge and Apsly.  as long as it stays below 0 this week at night we still should be on ice down here before xmas.

we could use a few eyes in the freezer i cant wait.

Musky fished out of Andy Meyers on Eagle and over at Cedar Lake, I've always wanted to ice fish up there. Congrats on a good start.

Yeah, I'm enjoying taking him out with me. I will be trying to take him out more. last winter was just too cold, not many days above -30c, he's pretty hardy but he aint a husky.

my beagle hates being in the permanent hut.  but will curl up under my lawn chair in my Nanook.  or sits on the seat of the sled and bark at the wind and snow.  shes good at eating all the minnow pieces people chuck out the door.  cant take her in the boot  instant diarrhea  just terrible.

Thanks Andrew,

Might be taking a leaf out of your book soon,

caught one of these in front of the house late summer, they are colonizing our lake, might try round the point this evening.

Late summer crappie off our shore.

After reading about your dog VC, it reminded me of an experience I once had while icefishing with my best friend many year's ago on Mille Lacs  lake in MN! My buddy always brought his outstanding black lab along whenever we went. One day as we were coming out of the fish house, here come's his lab carrying a nice sized walleye in his mouth! Followed by the rightful owner of the fish with a sheepish grin on his face! ;D He said he didn't dare to try taking the fish away from the dog, fearing that he might get bit! My guess would be that he didn't know lab's very well. Cap, my buddy's dog, was the biggest girlythingcat in the world! ;D :tipup:DIRTBALL2 ;)2

LOL…yup, he don't know Labs. Roloff is the sweetest natured animal in the world, he is hard to get mad at….even though he spends most of his time being a complete retard!
