Zelma 2014-2015
« on: Nov 23, 2014, 12:19 AM »
I was out at zelma today fishing from about 10 am to 5 pm.  I didnt officially measure the ice thickness but i would say it was easily 6 to 8 inches.  When we got there the ice was pretty free of snow cover, but by the time we left drifts had started forming in places.  Fishing was slow in the first place we set up (2 hours without a bite or even seeing a fish) between 10 am to 12 noon.  The next spot we set up in we got 2 pike and 2 walleye on the ice and had a couple line breaks on fish and about 4 more good bites that didn't amount to fish out of the water.  its too bad it was so windy and snowy today otherwise i feel we could have probably got a few more fish by being very mobile in that area.  It seemed like almost every fish (besides one or two) we had in the area and saw on the sonar/camera would bite.

Good on u for sticking it out and finding those elusive ones that where hiding just for u! Having said that I would like to hit that lake a little more this year just cause. If you would care you throw a bone as to what parts of the lake a guy could consentrate on. I have the equipment to do the rest and hopefully the luck to go with it.

We were at the north end of the lake, however from my friends that fish it occasionally in the summer and say they do well all around the lake.  They say they just keep moving around and usually pick up a couple in most new places they try but it doesnt stick around in one spot for too long usually.  Maybe the fish are generally on the move?

Good luck and be sure to post your results!   Bradwell was cruel to me last year the few times i went.  I only went for early ice, twice in November, but we spent at least 8 hours there each time and were pretty mobile.  The first time we got lucky with our first choice and immediately set up over top of about 5 fish within 10 min of fishing. however none of them had any interest at all in biting our hooks.  Spent a good chunk of that day staring at fish staring at our hooks and doing nothing lol.  Threw everything we had at them too!  The second time we didnt see many fish but caught one perch throughout the day.  We did see some guys come in strictly fishing for perch and they drilled about say 10 holes.  They bounced around working each hole for a bit using tiny hooks and meal worms or maggots (cant remember which but it was small bait) and they caught maybe 4-6 perch between the two of them in a couple hours.  If you were after perch that would probably be a pretty good stategy to employ.  We were hole hopping too that day but only with bigger baits and hooks.

Had a nice day at Bradwell.   Pearch where hot and heavy but very smart.  Had to hole hop between 6 holes to have a lot of fun.  They where eager as well, follow them from the bottom and progress upwards using my sonar. Approx. 10 in. Of ice.

We were out on Zelma on the 23rd. Buddy caught a nice burbot which surprised us all. Collectively we got about 8-10 pike, and about 10 walleye(all under a foot long lol). We fished near the boat launch on the edge of a weed bed. Good times! There was about 1 1/2 inches of water on the ice by the end of the day. Cant say I've ice fished in the rain before!

Just a few days ago I did check out that lake from the south east drive on spot and from the north west end boat launch. Ice was 15" and even. There was very little snow. A few shacks and trucks were on the ice. They were over the weed beds near shore. I went over 300 yards off shore and drilled ~ 20 holes. The deepest I found was just over 15 fow.

Has anyone been fishing out at zelma lately?  Can anyone comment on how the fishing has been?  We had average luck out there early in the season.

Captain Morgan I use to fish Zelma in summers when I lived in Watrous fished it for about 5 summers straight and caught tons of jack even big ones in the 10 to 20 lb range as well as a lot of walleye in many areas never did catch any perch there. I'm not sayin there not in there but I never found em.

There is a boat launch in the south west corner if ur cutting up between Allan and young. Also I belive many people access on somewhere on the north east end there usually shacks there. I have had good luck there in the summer big jacks and nice eyes.

driving on last saturday with a truck was really easy.  I think a car could even get out if you dodged the drifts.  Lot of bare ice still to be seen and occasional drifts.

Fishing was so so, the pike were very agressive.  perch would look at the hook and then run off when movement was too much.  we only seen one walleye which was also very skittish.

Anybody ever specifically target burbot on zelma? I'd like to catch one, since I've never done so before. I imagine the deep basin over on the west side out from the road?

just the odd drift here and there...fishing sucked...all the fish are asleep...caught three little dink walleye right at dusk. Drove on....ice is 30+ inches. typical res. fishing in the dead of winter. the odd guy picking up one here or there.Save your time and go to bigger lks with more depth....just my two cents worth though
