Tanaka 270 + Mora 8"
« on: Nov 20, 2014, 04:00 PM »
Has anyone used this combo?  I've heard of people using the Tanaka with a Mora 6" but not 8" yet.  I'm curious if it cuts as smooth as with the Nils 8", also if it's close to as fast.  I'm worried it wouldn't have enough power and would bog in slushy/thick ice conditions.

Also for guys with the Tanaka/Mora combo, isn't the Mora shaft really short?  Is there an extension to make it capable of cutting through 40+ inches of ice?

The 8 in. works fine. The 7 and 8 are the same bit with different blades. I have around a 4 in adapter on my 7 in and it can drill 3 feet. It cuts fine. Get both bits  and give each a try. You won't have a lot of money invested as they are cheap used.

With the help of Bee and some others on IS i went with the tanaka and 8in mora setup. Tried it last weekend and it rips!! Crazy how good it is. By no means underpowered with the mora. I am very impressed at how well this setup works. Plus it is light! You will not be dissappointed.

I can't see a problem with it, if you're really worried about it then pick up a TIA 350!

I already have the 350 with an 8" Lazer 224, it rips but I'm thinking of going lighter.  I will never use anything larger than an 8" hole, so I guess I'm looking to downgrade   ???

Thanks for the quick replies fellas

Any experience with the Lazer compared to the mora on the tanaka?

I have a friend who used one. About the same in cutting. Both take the same adapter.

Thanks Bee. I just have an opportunity to pick up an 8in lazer that is barely used for $50 so pretty sure I will try it out.

Does anyone know what the size of the collar is on the tanaka 270 and thread count? I'm gonna have someone make me an adapter to run either a mora or lazer.  Nothing wrong with my Nils just want to keep my options open incase something were to happen plus I already have a 6"lazer for early ice.
