Polaris 550's
« on: Nov 17, 2014, 07:43 AM »
I see a lot of the Polaris Indy 550's used and new for sale.  Are they like the 3.0L engine in the boat that everyone regrets they purchased?  I'm in the market for (2) sleds.  I currently ride my brothers;  800 Switchback and 600 Dragon and I can't recall what the other is other than 4-stroke turbo charged and rides very very nice.

It will be me and my 15yo daughter most of the time or me and my wife.  I'm 6ft, 185lbs.  I'll look at buying a 3rd next year.  I'm not looking for a hot rod sled and would use one to take ice fishing.  I do have 5 kids and a trail <1 mile from my house.

Well going from an 800 to a 550 is gonna feel like you cant get enough out of the throttle, but i ride a 440 and it pulls 3 sleds with gear and 3 ppl without an issue

The Polaris 550 engine is notorious for the "midrange burndown syndrome".  I believe it was isolated to the Edge chassis (early to mid 2000's depending on the model) and I'm sure it didn't happen to every sled that came off the line, but I recommend at least doing a quick Google search before buying one.
