To the people that put up their pike bait early, we have gotten in what I think will be the first and only seined bait for the fall. First come first serve.

just curious what makes seined bait different from trapped bait?

Its very difficult to catch a shiner bigger than 6" in a trap. Plus seined bait if taken properly will still have all of its slime coat where some trapped bait gets scratched up.

I've been getting some nice big dace around 6" in my traps lately. Do you think there will be a big shiner shortage like at the end of last year?

there is going to be the same shortage this year as last year. I'm going to run out even sooner as I have put up about %20 less this fall.

What are the restrictions on seining? Not that I have a net or anything, but if I did, could I legally go out and sein shiners without a special permit?

Anyone pulling the net needs a bait dealers licence.

A bait dealer's license does not allow you to seine bait. You need a bait wholesaler's license to harvest wild baitfish for resale. Someone with a dealer's license has to buy bait from a wholesaler. Anyone with a fishing license can harvest baitfish for personal use by means of a bait trap or hook and line. Only a wholesaler can use nets including seines.
