Let's hear from everyone!!!
« on: Nov 12, 2014, 10:49 AM »
Getting anxious... hoping for some fishable channels for the 11-21 weekend. May unfreeze again, but I wouldn't be surprised to see at least a few sheltered channels that weekend. Same thing happened last year though a little later. Was wanting to go but hadn't checked the boards or any spots. Found out people had been fishing for like 3-4 days!!!

I just don't know.  Right now it is dependent on whether the forecast is true and holds up.  Right now it aint.

I would also think the ground around the shoreline will be warm for a bit yet, making the edges easily soft also.

Agree about the shoreline and ground not being frozen...and with lake temps still in the mid to upper 40's even if a channel does freeze the water under it may cause it to melt from the bottom if mixing with main lake water due to wind.  Shallow ponds may freeze quick, but I would be leery of any channel connected to open water, especially if there is wind blown current from the main lake.  It would take some super cold temps to drop the lake temps 10 or more degrees in 2 weeks.

The good news is were certainly headed in the right direction though.  I would think any early ice will just further go towards helping out the real deal when it does come along.  I'm starting to get excited too just like everyone else.

lol...as long as we don't get a bunch of snow on the ice... ;D

A skim isn't so bad.... plus makes for easier deer tracking, rabbit hunting, and helps when fishing the shallows on clear ice....

Hope to clarify your question. I think that snow will lower the temperature of the water. However, if you have a thin layer of ice and snow covers it, it would be like putting a blanket over the ice. It will insulate the ice and put a halt to the ice making process. Just my 2 cents.

I guess I'm asking if it snows enough will the slushy water freezes faster because the wind won't make as much waves.

Snow CAN help to get water temp down. Wind can also help to get the water temp down but to get it to freeze less wind is better as still water freezes easier than moving water. And if the surface is freezing I like some snow in it as ice that is slightly cloudy does help to keep shallow fish from being so spooky.

Agreed on not spooking fish but if its clear a lot of times I can set my transducer on it and it sees through avoiding extra drilling

Checking in. I am gonna guess around the last week of November or the first week of December for first ice. Either way, I'm ready anytime! ;D
