Farm Ponds, How to go about asking for permission
« on: Nov 11, 2014, 08:36 AM »
I have a few ponds around me that are perfect for early ice action, however they are on someone's property. How do most of you go about gaining permission? Are their similar forms that must be signed like for granting hunting access?

For fishing a good old fashioned knock on the door should suffice.

Good attire and hygiene ...doesn't have to be your Sunday best . Also ask permission way ahead of time . Assure them that it only be you or if you have a fishing partner make sure they are with you when you ask ...an in person visit is a must ... be simple and  direct and be certain to thank them for their time regardless of the answer.
Give a man a fish he eats for a day .Teach a man to ice fish he has an obsession for a lifetime

In the areas I normally fish (SW CT and SE PA) I feel that the biggest obstacle to overcome would be the issue that the owners don't want to be liable if I fall through the ice.

Luckily CT specifically exempts landowners from liability if they allow free recreational use of their property. As always there are caveats, such as concealing or failing to disclose a dangerous condition known to the landowner.

Is that posted anywhere on the CT website? That would be awesome to carry along with me as proof.

After you get caught....just kidding!

Present yourself as responsible and offer to provide some fillets. Offer up your driver license info so that you can be held accountable for trash and damage.
