Just an idea, Vexilar normally sells their FL-10 (which is designed to be an in-dash unit) for $279 but it is on sale right now on their website for $179. That price includes a 12 degree puck transducer. If you were handy you could whip up a small case for this and flush mount it right in the case or, if you really want to get creative, for those of you with a "deck" over your sled in your portable fish house, you could mount it permanently in the shack or in the side of a kitty litter bucket or just about anywhere with a little bit of flat surface.
This is basically the equivalent of an FL-8 (no zoom) but you have the depth range settings and you have gain control. I don't think you have interference rejection though. Good price on that unit right now.
