I'm new to fishing around the Brookings area, I'm originally from Pierre. Where are some good spots to do some ice fishing around Brookings? I'm mainly looking's for Northerns or Walleye.

I know it makes you wonder why west river is the red headed stepchild when it comes to walleye.
Keep your stick on the ice we are all in this together.

Dakota Backroads in Lake Preston (west of Brookings on 14 about 30 miles) is a fantastic resource for local lakes... great bait, guide service and rentals.  Give Ryan a call and he'll point you in the right direction.

Gas N More in Brookings is where I get all my bait because it close.  As FourEyes said, Dakota Backroads in Lake Preston I have heard good things about.  Runnings in Brookings sells bait as well but I have never bought any there.

FWIW local bait shops should be able to point out areas that tend to jave bad ice.  Sinai has some points and narrows to stay away from on West side most of the season.  Thompson as well at mouth of Schaefer's Slough.

Thanks for the bait shop info everyone. With the nasty weather I'm sure we will all be getting the itch to hit the ice soon!!

Where is the area on Schaefers that people fall through every year? Is it just east of the boat dock out of the state park?? Is a guy able to walk from the boat ramp to Schaefers?  Planning a trip up there this weekend. Thanks!

Mouth of the slough where it connects to lake Thompson - like you said just East of the boat ramp.  There's also a narrow where you can get into the East side of the slough where it's usually sketchy.  Most guys go straight onto the slough from the parking lot rather than going from boat ramp.  Make sure you have your SD State Park sticker - they wrote a lot of tickets last year with the amount of traffic that was there.  I'll be there Saturday morning - hopefully before the herd... good luck!
