30" or 27" ml rod?
« on: Oct 29, 2014, 07:01 PM »
I'm getting one of the new st croix avid ice rods and trying to choose between the 27 or 30 inch ml rod I normally like longer rods but what do you all think I'll be using it for shallow water trout and sometimes crappie

i usually only use long rods when I'm going for big fish. so i would go with the 27
I hate my username. I made it when I was 14 and I dont know how to change it.

I am bringing this thread back from the dead because i just bought two 27"avid jigging rods, one in a M and one in a ML and think i should have got the 30".  I got the 27" because i fish in a flipover.  But, i just bought a Quickfish 3 and can now go with a longer rod. Do you guys think i should exchange the rods, or is it not that big of a deal? I am primarily jigging for walleye and perch.

28" medium with a fast action tip is best for trout and Crappie in my opinion.......

I prefer longer ice fishing rods. I feel more confident with them. I don't know if they are more forgiving or not, but it's what seems to work for me.

i personally prefer the longer rods as well, i have four of the st croix premier ice rods, and they are all 36" and don't regret one bit going with the longer ones. One of them is a light action and mainly use it for perch and sometimes trout, either way you can't go wrong with anything from st croix.

I have the Avid 30" M and Avid 27" ML, I like the 27" length for inside the shanty and for smaller fish. The 30" M is a beast and while it's usable inside my popup, I think a 27" would have been just a little easier to move around.

Yeah i deffinately agree if it's going to be used in a house a shorter rod is desirable, they all have there place and purpose
