Tanning Fish Skins
« on: Oct 19, 2014, 09:31 AM »
I've been tanning a pike hyde from a 13.2 lb pike that I caught 2 weeks ago. It's turning out good so far and I'm just waiting for it to dry for a few days. Anybody ever done this? I'm gonna try making a hat-band and also dressing up my willow walking stick.

I thought about doing this with crappie or bluegill and wrap my ice rod handles and put some laquer over that.

Wow I lost this thread. Yes I will get some pics up, I don't know how well the colors will hold up but I'm in the final drying stage now so won't be long. Thanks for the link Rags, I'll read it at home tonight.

Yes all kinds of stuff can be done with fish skins. I'm a taxidermist and with the right care, the posibilites are almost endless...  Over the summer I tanned and carded some striper heads from our spring catch, once they were dried I camo dipped them. They got pretty cool. I thought about doing some other stuff with the skins but I usually don't get a whole lot of time to work on my own mounts... I'll post some pics of the heads when I get a chance.

I've never seen any either but I figured everyone likes the camo on deer and bear skulls so I tried it on fish.  The cool thing is that you can keep your fish to eat and still get a trophy to put on the mantle or on the wall or atop the gun cabnet. Plus its a lot cheaper than getting the whole thing mounted.

Here is a link to some pics of my pike skin. You have to click on the individual picture urls to view them. It turned out really good and once it is covered in a clearcoat as a hatband or walking stick wrap it will look great. I'm impressed with how well the pattern held up. Heck I may just hang it on the wall by my other mounts. Let me know if you can't view them, I've never done this before. My photobucket expired so I'm hosting on my favorite bass fishing site.

That's weird, I logged off and then tried to see them and it let me. When I'm logged on the pics automatically come up, when I'm logged off you see the url for the pic and click on it and the pic appears. Sorry guys. I'll figure something else out. Did you guys try clicking on the url where the pic would ordinarily be?

Wow thanks Missoulafish! I was just going to say that I tried a different pc than my own and sure enough, couldn't view the pics. I should get a new hosting account set up. I think I'll try tinypic.com.

Yeah there are a lot of pics I could have posted in the past but I was too lazy to use a hosting site. I'll have to submit. On the bass fishing site that I frequent you can just upload from your pc.
