HT Ice Rigger Rod Tender??
« on: Oct 18, 2014, 04:16 PM »
Wasn't sure what would have been the best spot to put this. So here it is.
I'm a tip up guy the jigs here and there with no luck. It's a dedication/trolling thing I know.  Most of the guys I go out with only use tip ups. So I picked up the HT Ice Rigger Rod Tender to get more use out of my Ice Rods. I need a lil advice on the line to use. My plan is to run a main line of braid with a snap swivel or clip with an 18" flouro leader. Leader size will changs do to fish and fishing area. Mostly we go for Bass and Pike. Last 3 seasons for me have been Pickeral with a few Trout tossed in.
So.
Braid? Was thinking PP 20lb
Flouro? Was thinking 6lb up to 20lb for toothy fish.

I'm sure I'll have a few more questions. I'll start with these.

Thanks.

For openers don't believe anyone that says mono (Berkley XL 14# or 17#) will freeze up in the ice. It will not.
Most braids will.

That's what I was thinking. The Braid I have is what didn't fit on my surf reels. Straight mono I thought about even with a wire leader.

I still like to use fire line.  Braid had issues with freezing.

I have been looking into these. Do they work well with panfish? Also have heard good things about the jaw jacker.

I'm like you in that my tip-up success rate is none too good. I use a similar line setup to what you use. For trout it's a 10# PowerPro braid with a 6# Fluoro leader 24". The Cabela's brand seems to be decent leader. For pike I go to a 20# PowerPro main line with an 80# fluoro leader. Never had a problem with braid freezing in a deadstick application.  I wouldn't use less than 40# leader for pike or you risk getting bit off. Or go to steel leader if your fish aren't too line shy. I make my quick strike rigs with the heavy fluoro, #6 Owner trebles and set them under a JawJacker type hooksetter that I fabricate. Works like a charm.

Thanks for the replies. I'll definately have this out on the ice this season. Personally I believe my nephew will enjoy reeling in a fish more than wrapping line around a tip-up spool.

IMO they are too hard to trip for panfish.  You would be better off with something very sensitive like a tip down.

if youre  a tip up guy, these will be a natural fit for you.
of course, they won't really help you utilize your existing jigging rods.

maybe "the dangler" I believe is it's name would be a better fit. They are yellow and black and most online retailers carry them. The YT videos on this product look pretty interesting.

I'm going to try these this year. I normally jig but one place I go I get spanked by my friend that has tipdowns.

Ht Ice rigger vs the Jaw jacker.  Other than price, any preferences from those who have used both?

Apples & oranges, am1445.  Totally different, one is a rod holder with a flag indicator , other is an automatic hook setter.     ;)2

Check my avatar.

I have used them successfully for perch, gills, and crappie, light line sometimes has a tendency to slip through the release, ya still catch fish but the flag doesn't go up, so there is some trial and error to finding the sweet spot in the release for light line.
