What kind of dog should I get for ice fishing?
« on: Oct 15, 2014, 03:48 PM »
Funny question I know. After my dog died a few years ago I haven't really wanted another one but now I'm ready. I had a great pyrenees which is a hard dog to train but I spent many many hours training her to stick around off leash. She was a great companion. I would like another dog that would enjoy going out on the ice with me. Any suggestions?

Get a Lab!! Pick a color, (black, chocolate, or yellow) but get a Lab!!! They'll want to go with you everywhere!! They're intelligent and great around kids!!  #1 dog in America!! And for a good reason!!! Good luck!!

I am partial to Golden Retrievers. Also Rottweiler's. Both make good dogs with the right training. But a lot of folks don't like dogs peeing on their gear. So get a female.

Dog boots and they will be fine. Mostly to stop abrasions. Dogs don't seem to get frost bite.

They do very well in the cold!! The will break ice when duck hunting!! My buddies Lab used to come in the fish house and bobber watch!! He'd bark when a bobber went down!! If the bite was slow he would go lay on the snow we banked up around the house! He was great in the boat during the summer also!  You won't be disappointed with one!!

For sure go with a lab. No issue with the cold especially if it is a English breed Lab, thicker hair then the American breed Lab. All around great outdoor dog and family dog. My lab's favorite thing is ice fishing. She loves it. Good Luck!

I thought of both a Husky and a Malamute. But I've been around so many Labs, that the choice was easy!! There's a good reason they make great  service dogs!!

They get along with other pets also! If you have another dog, it's the other dog that might be a problem!! An old girlfriend many years ago had a black Lab that had this white rubber baseball that he always wanted you to throw for him!! I took an old bat and whacked it into the snow covered woods by the house! Took that dog over a week to find that ball, but he looked for it every time you let him out!! lol... Her dad hid the bat after that!!!  :roflmao: ;)2

I bring my lab/german shorthair mix with me, and he is a wimp in the cold. He just lays down by the heater until its time to get a flag. Once I was fishing with some buddies and a smaller girl was walking two Bernese mountain dogs. Buddy 1 says "look at that girl taking her horses for a walk." I don't think I've ever laughed so hard.

I've always been a Beagle guy. Maybe not the best ice fishing dog, Beagles are tough to train to hang around when off leash, once they catch a sent they go blind and deaf. But I love bringing Jezzabelle on the hard water with me, she loves it too. Also think about the size hole you fish... I know the G.P. you had before wont go down any auger hole but you'd be surprised how big of a dog can slip through a 10" hole. Good luck with your decision.

PS Jezzabelle votes Beagle too lol

Chesapeake  Bay Retriever, damn intelligent dog, had 4 of them. Waterproof, strong, real loyal. Read up on them if not familiar with the breed.

I have an English setter and she loves to fish.  She is a great snow machine dog and will ride in front of me in back of me or in the back rack.  I have a vest and booties for cold weather -20 or so and she does fine.  Here are a few pics of my fishing partner.

Got agree with pfscott. About the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Forgot about them. Had a friend who had one as a kid. That dog sat out in the snow and waited for him at the bus stop every day. A very hardy dog made for cold and wet conditions. They are not for the inexperienced owner though.
