VERTICAL OR HORIZONAL JIGS
« on: Oct 12, 2014, 03:12 PM »
which on to use?? this is a BIG question, and it depends on a lot of things
but me if there is a lot of people on the ice then i go vertical[small target]
now where are you fishing, when, and for what, all makes a difference,
remember if only one rule there would be no fish, the fishers would have
got all of them[so change,change]--to me and may be only me if i do not
get a hit in 15 to 20mins?? THEN  i change holes
i have both types with me all the time, and in different sizes.

NOTE-- each body of water and each type of fish is different,i also think time
is a big factor also.

I myself fish with a hut and heater and gear so I like to drill test holes before setting up my hut for fishing I usually drill 8 - 10 holes test each one for about 5 minutes or so if nothing go to the next and so on until I'm on the fish and I do prefor vertical jigging as in a teardrop compared to pursay a rapala jigging rap. I'm not big on going far out onto a lake for the same fish I will be able to catch close into shore or on a privately owned pond there is a lot of dangers in ice fishing but sometimes Its well worth the small risk :icefish:
And so it begins........

Every body of water is different and I let the fish tell me what to use, but the first jig that goes down most holes for me is horizontal (Chubby Darter), I find the quality of fish, on average is better with a horizontal jig... As to length of time at a hole, with out anything happening 3 min a hole jigging.  Unless I am being lazy and I try not to be. I do come back and re-fish holes.

Everyone has there way of fishing, I usually start out with a horizontal jig tied to the bottom of the smallest kastmaster you can get, tie it on so its 2inches below the kastmaster, when I get to where I want to fish I start by seeing if theres anything on the fish finder, if im marking fish I drop my bait down just above them and see what happens if there are no marks I send the kastmaster with the jig tied on and bounce it off the bottom a few times if I dont start marking fish in 10 minutes or so I move, if im marking fish and not getting any I grap one of my other rods rigged with something smaller, I prefer horizontal jigs when using wax worms and vertical jigs if im using minnow heads, I catch more fish on horizontal jigs than vertical jigs

My answer is yes! Most of my panfishing is done with Caty Jigs. I have a pretty good collection of both types and switch back and forth depending on the activity.
