I just got a used nils and I don't see why its so hard to sharpen the blades I sharpened mine with a hand diamond sharpener and was extra carefull due to the slight curve to the blades but now I could shave with it..
APJ You should freeze a five gallon bucket of water and and try out your nils. dont wait for fishing season just to find out that it might not cut at all. unless you've got a backup auger. better to be sure than sorry.
Ive got a brand new Jiffy 10inch as well just real heavy to lug around. good idea I will freeze a 5-gal bucket of water and try it. Let you all know soon.
I suggest calling Frank before shipping the blade. I'm pretty sure I recall him posting years ago that improper sharpening can and sometimes does ruin the blade, it could be beyond repair. Best to check with him.
