Nils blade sharpening
« on: Oct 07, 2014, 09:35 AM »
I seem to remember a Maine bait shop posting on here that they'd be getting a jig to sharpen Nils blades, did that end up happening? I'd rather give my money to someone in state than send my blade to Minnesota.

I don,t think so. You may want to check with Dags  as they were in line to get some training.

I spoke to Nils USA  which is in Vermont last week and he said there are two places to get bits sharpened. They are in MN and MA. I have sent bits to Frank in MN and they are better than new and dangerously sharp. Great guy, great service.

Frank is the man I have used him before with my nils  blades and they come out sharper than new.  He goes by sharp nils on here.

I echo the praise for Frank's great service.  He has made my blades better than new with very quick turn around. I think the  OP may have been refering to this post by the good folks at Dag's. Not sure where they stand on this endeavor.  Dylan and Marcel have also provided me excellent service.

I just got a used nils and I don't see why its so hard to sharpen the blades  I sharpened mine with a hand diamond sharpener and was extra carefull due to the slight curve to the blades but now I could shave with it..

Shaving your face and shaving ice to make a hole are just a little different.   Hope it works out for you.  The issue is that it's very easy to get a very slightly wavy edge and then -----  well, not much shaving gonna happen.
The two guys that sharpen nils heads are factory certified and, I believe, have jigs to make things "perfect".

APJ  You should freeze a five gallon bucket of water and and try out your nils. dont wait for fishing season just to find out that it might not cut at all. unless you've got a backup auger.  better to be sure than sorry.

Get a video - if your NILs sharpening works out - you might have a new business.  Really hope it works for you.

Well no need for a video I tried my best to sharpen the blades and keep the exact angle and boy it is sharp but it will not cut! just bounces in the bucket of ice I froze. This is the first blade I could not sharpen. I will be sending it out to Franks.. Thanks for the info everyone ..

I suggest calling Frank before shipping the blade. I'm pretty sure I recall him posting years ago that improper sharpening can and sometimes does ruin the blade, it could be beyond repair. Best to check with him.

APJ, sorry it did not work out for you.  I have two heads for my 8" NILs, Frank gets one each year, unless I have to make a switch during the season for some reason (like running into sand in the ice  :%$#!: )

Guy in Mass is awesome! I sent three heads back to him, two that were actually warped instead of dull. All three came back within a week and cut like lightning! charged $20 a piece plus shipping. All three were the power point blades.
