Some of the WY 2014-2015 Fishing Reg Changes

A few more bodies of water have been added to the Special Winter Ice Fishing Provisions. From the G&F Newsletter:

Other regulation changes of note across the Cowboy State include: the use of corn is legal as bait (where bait is allowed), Boulder Lake, Lake Hattie, and Wheatland Reservoir #3 have been added to the Special Winter Ice Fishing Provision (allowing the use of 6 rods or tip-ups), the creel limit for walleye is twelve (12) fish on Alcova Reservoir

There are quite a few rainbow trout guys in that area, and the walleye are feeding on them fairly heavily and somewhat taking over I believe. Come on up and put a dent in them!

As far as I knew corn was legal last year on the gorge. I never did use any but there were discussions all over the place.

The use of corn for fishing was prohibited by Wyoming Statute.  Because of that situation an extra step had to be taken to allow the G&F Commission to get the use of corn for fishing into a regulation.  That was done and now the use of corn as fishing bait is in the group of regulations that were discussed and passed by G&F Commission at their Sept. meeting in Pinedale.  That group of regulations (there are several including allowing the importation of fathead minnows by bait dealers) is now waiting for the Governor's signature.  If the Gov. signs the regulations, and he most likely will, regulations will become effective on January 1, 2015.

Bottom line is the use of corn for fishing bait snafu is likely coming to an end and the use of corn will be allowed for fishing bait in the near future.

You are correct, the regs. booklets that are in print now do not have the section that says you can not use corn, that is why most folks assumed you could use corn for fish bait.  But, as I mentioned above there is an extra step that had to be taken in the process.  That has been done and the use of corn reg., the allowing artificial light reg., importation of fathead minnow by bait dealers reg. and a few others were passed as a package by the G&F Comm. and are now waiting for the Governor's signature.  With that signature they will become effective January 1, 2015.

Yes, jopes we all thought is was legal a few months ago but that was not the case.  Now that extra step has been taken and if the Gov. signs the regulations that were sent to his office it finally will be legal.

But if it is not in the regs as illegal, I would think it would be hard to charge a person with it.

When the legislature did away with the statute that prevented the use of corn as fish bait it was thought that was all that was needed to make it legal to use as bait.  But, what the Legislature did when removing that statute was allow the Game and Fish Comm. to regulate the use of corn as bait. So, the proposal had to go through the regulations process.  I know, it seems bureaucratic, but that is the way it is.  As I have mentioned that process has been completed and now the regulations package is waiting the Governor's signature.   With that signature the corn regulation (and several others) will become effective on Jan. 1 2015.

As far as it being difficult to charge a person with the violation, I don't know.  Let's just wait until January 1.
