Just bought an Ion Ice Auger
« on: Sep 28, 2014, 08:27 AM »
After last seasons amazing ice... I decided that my flabby arms need a break... No more drilling by hand.  I decided to go with the Ion rather than gas.  It gives me more options of places to ice fish because of regulations on gas.  Well see...... FLAGS ! FLAGS ! FLAGS !

Talk to Baitbucket and see if he can sell you a battery cover thing his wife made to keep the battery warm.  I think he should patent them and sell them.

Noticed on their site ion now sells a battery warming bag. Used mine all night hrough last year's winter from heck and never had an issue with the battery though, so don't think i will be spending the money on a bag. Enjoy the auger, i loved mine last season and can't wait to break it out again in a few months!

I've never had a problem with the battery being cold but the warming bag would be a good idea for the really cold days.

I've seen them in action and was impressed by its cutting power. I know batteries will have issues after consistent cold weather, example Dewalt 20v lithium batteries. However I always forget to bring the drill box in the house at night. I'm sure you will bring the auger inside at night. A little extra warmth from a black bag couldn't hurt. Black in the sun will definitely help. Someone mentioned the legality factor, which makes me curious if a propane powered auger is the same as a gasoline powered auger when there are rules on motors allowed? Anyway  sure you will love the new Ion! Best of luck in your upcoming ice season! 👍👍🎏⛄🎣🎉

I thought you loved the Ion Will? What is the biggest hole you can cut with a drill and how thick can it cut through consistently? Your Ion was impressive!

I would have held on to the Ion. What happens if we get 2 feet of ice this season? Will the drill hold up? What's the biggest hole you can cut , 6" wide? How thick will it cut through consistently?

Guys were cutting thru up to 2ft of ice using an 8in auger and the Milwauke Fuel 18v Hammer Drill.

Ive only been using a 6in on my Rigid 18v Hammer drill. Last year i was getting roughly 80 holes thru 18 inches of ice.

I held onto the Ion in case the drill didnt work out. But it did, and was awesome at that. Weighing only 10lbs and lasting all day was perfect for my style of fishing. I was also able to get what I paid for the Ion so in the end i got money back after buying the drill setup.

Now i have an awesome drill to use during the off season, and i can also pop the auger off the drill and use the drill to screw in my ice anchors for my pop up.

Something smells like it is burning .... oh wait its your drill....  keep that blade SHARP.   I still can't believe that I have seen the same drill burn up drilling a 2" hole through wood using a hole saw but it holds up drilling a 6" hole through 14" of ice.

Last season I took Wills Drill/Auger and just started cutting holes (he was leaving for the day) with 1 1/2 batteries I stopped counting at 40 hole in a row... I cut many more after that and gave him back one dead battery and one with more juice to go, but cutting that many hole in a row was no fun! I look forward to setting up the same type of rig! Ice must not be as hard to drill as wood...

It probably has to do with pressure. Using the hole saw the guy is prolly leaning on it. As an ice auger you dont have to apply any pressure, it just cuts..
