Pike lakes in Central Montana ?
« on: Sep 25, 2014, 09:38 AM »
This ice fishing season i would like to focus on catching some pike as i never have caught one. I spend my summers fly fishing for trout in the Yellowstone, Madison river areas. I was wondering what lakes would be a good starting point in my area? I Know there is nothing real close.  Any ideas to steer me into the right area would be appreciated. Thanx!

Toston dam has a few. But the Seeley lake region would probably be your best bet.

Your best bet is going to be to make a weekend trip and head to Peck.  With the water up again this year I"m looking forward to getting out in the Crooked Creek bay and chasing some pike in the willows as soon as it freezes up.

One thing I have noticed is that fly fishing on the ice is pretty slow.  Good luck.

Give a man a fish,  he eats for a day.
Teach a man to fish,  he sits all day on the ice drinking beer.

I'll the second the Ft Peck option. Also look into Fresno and Nelson for pike. But definitely a person needs to hit Peck. It can be difficult to narrow in on them, but the probability of hammering big pike on Peck is going to be high this year with the water level.

Frances and Beaver Creek Reservoir are almost sure hits for Pike on most days.

Beaver Creek scares me though with the thermals and the temps out there. Ice is sketchy in spots, so be careful. But yes, you can catch some pretty good pike/walleyes there.
