Tanaka 350 Adapter
« on: Sep 16, 2014, 09:10 AM »
I already posted this in the augers forum but have no replies in almost a week.

I'm looking for an adapter to pair my Tanaka 350 with either a Nils or a Strikemaster auger so if anyone can point me in the right direction that'd be great.

Try giving one of their dealers a call. I got my powerhead not the 350 though from red rock wilderness store, they carry the 350 power head also. Good luck

I've called a few dealers, none in stock but coming soon and they couldn't quote me a price.  I also called Nils USA and they had noon in stock currently but will soon and the price was something ridiculous like $75 plus shipping.

I guess what I'm looking for is someone who custom makes them or has gotten one made. I know there's a few guys on the forum from Canada who use the 350 with a 10" Strikemaster so I'm hoping to hear from them. Sent a couple PM's but no response just yet.

thats what it is on mine, fits a 1/2 inch jacobs chuck.
you will have to check whats on the 350, buy the bolt and bring it to a machine shop to have the other end machined to whatever auger you buy, nils is just a flat with 2 holes and a bolt

Definitely not a 1/2 x 20... it's not threaded.  I have a feeling I will be dealing with a machine shop to get something made.  I'd rather not have to go that route but oh well.

Looks like you could put a auger right on that and run a bolt and lock nut to keep it on.

You don't need a machine shop. An adapter is nothing more than a pipe with one end bigger than the other. It doesn't need to be threaded. A regular bolt and a lock nut work fine. If you can weld, or know someone who can, you can make one yourself. I made a 12" extension for mine in about 20 minutes last year.

You might want to reconsider the coupler sold by Nils. It is very  well made with tight tolerances so there is no play in the connection. It is designed to specifically fit the nils auger. the 350 has a very different coupler than the 270. There is a close up of the coupler for the 350 in post #5 of this thread.

Very nice pictures and the best ones I've seen of the Nils adapter.  That is probably the route I'll end up going but I would really like to use the 350 with the strikemaster bit that I already have.

How did you like the 350/Nils combo compared to the 270/Nils combo?  Which one drills faster?

I love the Tanaka/Nils combo. The 350 has more torque, the 270 is almost twice as fast (41:1 vs 24:1). If you want a 10 inch then the 350 is a must. Since I use 8 inch holes by choice I would get the 270 if I had it to do over again. As with many things in life I assumed that bigger was better, but here not so much.  The 270 costs less and is much faster. A friend of mine has the 270, and when we had them side by side, the speed difference was dramatic.
