Custom Rod
« on: Sep 05, 2014, 03:54 PM »
Just finished building one of my new casting rods for use on my Arctic Warrior/Nor'Easter tip ups.

36in Medium spiral wrapped. Still gotta epoxy the threads, but its pretty much done

Epoxied the guides, all dry now. Hard to tell by the pics, but they look good

never thought about doing a spiral wrap on an ice rod before, granted I don't do many if any baitcasters but if I do I may have to seriously consider doing a spiral

I think I'm going to build a spiral guide casting rod this fall too. Looks nice. I found a pretty darn good deal on cork and a large metallic thread assortment on eBay so now I just need to start buying up goddess and reel seats. I'm thinking about adding some very fine metallic and or iridescent glitter that I bought on eBay to either the epoxy on my guide wraps or possibly just the blanks. Have any of you tried that? I have a Wright & McGill casting rod with some in it and it looks amazing in the sunlight.

BaitBucket pardon my ignorance buy why are the guides not in a straight line like on most mass produced rods?

The idea of a spiral wrapped rod is that the line from a cast reel starts on top like normal, and then follows the offset guides to spiral to the bottom of the rod. This transfers the pressure of wanting to twist the rod like on a traditional casting rod.

If you have ever been deep sea fishing using a conventional reel and find yourself fighting to keep the rod from rotating. This prevents that.

This is my first attempt at rod building. Doesnt seem very tricky at all. I dont even own all the right tools/wrapping rack.

Here is the second rod. I used a 6th eye which made a big difference

BaitBucket thank you for the explanation and You Tube link. I now know that a spiral wrap is not a way of fastening rod line guides to the rod blank . This is part of what makes Ice shanty such a great website the free sharing of information and knowledge.

Only thing I would change would be to more gradually spiral them until the last two were downfacing.

That has been proven to not be as effective as doing it the way i did it. The faster u get the eyes to the bottom the less pull youll feel. If you use a gradual spiral there is still some pull.

Some pics of the rod with line under load. Plenty of line clearance around the blank.

With my 3 spiral wrapped rods done, I made one more that I felt would be a nice fit for my Teardrop pistol grip reel

Went with the Fuji split grip and the EVA Foam Butt and Fore Grip

Rod blank is a medium 31". Eyes are Fuji Harloys #12, #10, #8, #8, #7. From back to tip.

Thank you sir. It sure has the potential to be as addicting lol. Its not to difficult, i just started about a week ago.

That being said, Ill most likely never buy another rod again. I can build a much better quality rod for about 1/3 of the price of the higher brand names.

The ones I made in this thread cost about $20 to make ea.

I like it!  I actually just made a spiral wrapped rod for open water to slab with.  And yes...building rods is as addictive as the sport of fishing its self!

A couple people have asked what the idea was behind using the split reel seat.

I had 3 reasons for this. First was that it allows me to place my thumb or index finger in direct contact with the rod blank. My thought process here is that this will increase sensitivity allowing me to feel any vibration of the blank. It wont be dampened by the reel seat or grips. Second was weight, as its lighter than the one piece seats. Third was the ability to adjust the overall size of the seat to my reel.

What does everyone here use to epoxy on their handles?  I out one on tonight with JB Weld and not that stuff is strong smelling, but incredibly strong.  I started to feel like if I spent any more time in the basement I may have a hard time walking up the steps straight...

I prefer a 30 min give or take epoxy.  I tried some paste epoxy and didn't care for it...to stiff to for small blanks and doesn't flow thru the handle arbors.  I bought 16oz loctite epoxy at Menard's on sale for 5 bucks and it works great.
